South Africa Township Teaching in Cape Town

Trip code: SATT

Cape Town is widely considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful cities and with its vibrant nightlife and idyllic beaches; it offers the perfect place to visit during a gap year or career break. However, outside the city there are many townships in desperate need of volunteer assistance. Children lack access to necessary education and many have no structured environments to spend their days. This project is ideally suited to those who are interested in improving the education available to underprivileged children and really making a difference to their lives.

South Africa Township Teaching in Cape Town

Volunteer Role

This project works with children and the school from the Imizamo Yethu Township near Hout Bay. The school currently has around 1100 pupils and is very basic and under resourced. There is a very small play area, no assembly hall, no library and no gym.

The aim of the project is to help alleviate the strain on the already limited resources of the township school. Through your volunteer assistance, the children will benefit from your academic lessons, and you will also be able to provide them with extra tuition or help with after school activities in the afternoons.

The classroom activities that you can assist with include:

  • Helping the children with reading
  • Helping the children with writing
  • Helping with math, as many are behind in their learning
  • If you feel confident enough you could even stand up and teach your own class!
