Travelling
To us, travelling is one of the most rewarding, enriching, educational and enjoyable experiences you can have. The things you can see and learn while travelling on a gap year are practically infinite. Oh, and you might take a few photos, too!

What to pack to go travelling abroad? The bare minimum! Trust us, travelling on a gap year is much more fun when you're not being crippled by a huge rucksack! Going travelling isn't about looking good - most people are too busy taking in the scenery or getting to know their fellow travellers to worry about it. Obviously, what you pack depends a lot on where you're going travelling (although you're always going to need your passport!). Take a look at our What to pack for a gap year guide for country-specific advice. |
Worried about going travelling abroad? You're certainly not alone! It's natural to be worried about going travelling, particularly if it's your first time travelling or you're going alone. The first couple of days might be difficult but once you've settled in, your worries will disappear. And if you're going travelling alone, you're practically guaranteed to meet other people who have exactly the same worries about travelling as you! Check out our Travelling alone advice page if you're still feeling unsure. |

Taking the right attitude with you when you go travelling abroad
Travelling is a fantastic experience, but you need to approach it in the right way. Be aware that you'll experience different things while travelling on a gap year. The food, the language, the hours, the standard of living and social norms are all likely to be different. We're not saying you should fall in love with snake soup, but don't take the attitude that if it's different, it's wrong. Be open to learning about different cultures and travelling on gap year will be a fantastic experience.
Keeping in touch while you're travelling abroad
Technology has developed so much that it's not difficult not to keep in touch while in some countries! Internet cafes, mobile phones, phone cards, international SIM cards and the good old postcard all make it easy to stay in touch while travelling on a gap year. But calling home too often can take the joy out of travelling - see our Staying in touch on your gap year page.
Keeping in touch when you finish travelling abroad
It would be a huge shame to lose touch with all the people you've made friends with while travelling on a gap year! Use the Real Gap Watering Hole on Facebook to keep in touch.
Let us know about your travelling experience!
We'd love to see photos of you travelling on a gap year, and we might include them in our photo gallery.
