USA Monkey Sanctuary

The Monkey sanctuary is accredited by the America Sanctuary Association. It is safe, permanent home to rescued monkeys from around America who have been abused, confiscated by authorities, retired from research, or who are ex-pets. It is currently home to 118 primates and sadly has an ever-growing waiting list for new residents.

The sanctuary disapproves of the keeping of exotic animals as ‘pets’ and hopes the stealing of baby monkeys from their natural mothers will end. It is common practice for baby monkeys to be pulled from their protective mothers, sometimes as young as just three days old, to be sold as ‘pets’. This forced separation is a very distressing experience for both mother and baby. It can take a lifetime for the grieving mother to come out of a depression brought on by this trauma and there are always scars left on mother and baby from such cruelty.

The Sanctuary works toward creating a better life for the unfortunate animals who, due to the irreversible effects of their past, can no longer survive in the wild. They also work successfully with other credible animal sanctuaries, primate associations and animal protection organizations.

With such demanding pressures, the Monkey Sanctuary is dependent on volunteers to support the centre and help care for the orphaned, injured and rescued primates. During your time at the sanctuary, some of the activities you may be involved in include:

  • Husbandry
  • Cleaning
  • Food preparation and feeding
  • Cage construction
  • Fundraising
  • Grounds maintenance
  • Enrichment

The monkeys are a huge responsibility and require constant care, as they are no longer able to care for themselves due to their distressing backgrounds. You will immediately become part of a dedicated, hard working and friendly team whose number one priority is the monkeys.
