Uganda Reach Out to Children
You will volunteer as part of a community based organisation, which was established in 2001 to improve the welfare of disadvantaged children through the promotion of children’s rights, provision of vocational skills and the improvement of their environmental conditions.
The Volunteer RoleWorking with local project staff and volunteers you will help to identify target families and make home visits to assess their needs and create a profile based on this assessment. This will be used to prioritise the assistance to be provided to these families and to try to raise the necessary funds required to offer this support. The project mainly targets children living on their own, with terminally ill parents, or with elderly people and marginalised youth and women.
The Uganda volunteer project involves marginalised children in vocational training centres to make beds for other children and constructs shelters, latrines and kitchens for the families. Therefore, volunteers with any building, or vocational skills may also help out in this area.
You will also be involved in administration of the organisations activities and helping to write up reports about the target families identified and in particular writing fundraising proposals. Anyone with a reasonable level of written English will be of real value in this area, but if you have any experience in fundraising, or establishing key partner relationships your skills would be well placed here.
Project LocationKyotera, Southwest Uganda
Accommodation & MealsYou will stay in a comfortable, but basic shared volunteer house. The house does have flush toilets and showers, but there are often water shortages in this part of Uganda, so your water may have to be collected and buckets used to wash.
The house is situated in a safe area on the edge of the town and not far from the project offices. The property is fenced and gated and has a large garden with a covered outside dining area. There are staff at the house, including a cook, house keeper and a night watchman.
Two meals per day are provided. Breakfast is usually self-service, consisting of cereals, toast, fruit etc. You will usually take your own packed lunch with you each day. The cook will prepare the evening meal for you.
