Uganda Orphan Skills Training
The Uganda Orphan Training Centre aims to improve the welfare of HIV/AIDS orphans and vulnerable children by equipping them with the skills and knowledge to become independent and shape their future.
The Volunteer ProjectThe centre was started in January 2000 by community volunteers to support the ever increasing number of orphaned and vulnerable children out of school. These children, who have often lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, are unable to pay school fees, or buy study materials and with the serious lack of spaces in rural schools often receive no education.
As a Uganda volunteer you will provide training to the children at a vocational skills training centre, including skills such as carpentry and joinery, bricklaying and construction, tailoring, pottery, organic farming and animal husbandry and bark cloth making.
If you have skills in any other areas, such as vehicle mechanics, plumbing, or electrics, the centre is keen to introduce these courses to the training offered. Sport is also an important part of the activities available to the students, so you may help coaching football, netball, or athletics. You may also carry out HIV/AIDS awareness workshops with the trainees, as well as other members of the community.
Other Volunteer Work
Some of the classrooms and dormitories have still not been completed and there is no reliable power system, therefore for volunteers with an interest in building or labour work there are some great opportunities available.
Project LocationUganda is located where the savannah of East Africa meets the jungle of West Africa. It has a tradition of hospitality and easygoing people. The location of this orphan training programme is Kyotera in Southwest Uganda.
Accommodation & MealsYou will stay in a comfortable basic shared volunteer house in a safe area on the edge of town not far from the training centre. The house has flushing toilets and showers but there are often water shortages so water may have to be collected and buckets used to wash. The staff at the house includes a cook, house-keeper and a night watchman for your security.
Two meals a day are provided. Breakfast is usually self-service, you can take a packed lunch to the centre and the cook prepares evening meals.
