Vicky Morgan
The Real Kenya experience

vicky morgans gap experience

What was your motivation to take a gap break?
I had had enough of my full time job and wanted to get away, I also wanted to help out in Africa.

How did you feel before you joined the programme?
I was a bit nervous as this was my first time doing anything like this, but I was also excited as it was a new adventure.

How did Real Gap assist you? How did they compare with your expectations?
As I had never done anything like this before, they helped me greatly in preparing myself, such as advising me to arrange for my visa, book flights and they gave me insight to what relevant equipment I may have needed. They were always at the other end of the phone if I had any questions or concerns - They gave me a really positive start to my experience.

What was the accommodation like?
The accommodation had everything I needed, from a bed to showers (cold ones- but that was refreshing at most times given the hot environment we were in)! The staff at camp were a huge factor to my experience, they were welcoming, helpful and like family to me.

What did you think of the programme?
It was good, a range of projects and activities, which kept us on our toes and always made us feel involved. We also added some of our own activities whilst we were there such as we went to see the Masai Mara.

What was the most memorable moment of your trip?

It was our last weekend together and we were having a party at camp to celebrate the fact that we had successfully built two classrooms, and cleared a ‘buffer' zone in the forest. We had a huge BBQ and also had entertainment. The reason why this is my most memorable moment is the fact that the whole village came too, including all the workers and children. It was magical to all be celebrating together as one and dancing away under the stars.

Did your programme and destination meet your expectations? Any anecdotes?

This is a strange one to answer, I didn't really know what to expect as I had only seen Africa in photos or on TV. But I knew that it would be like a completely different world, and a whole new experience, which it was- it completely opened my eyes and I have developed myself in many ways. It really is a beautiful place.

What do you feel you accomplished during your programme?
I went out there hoping to accomplish many factors, mainly to help out in Africa and achieve our project goals, but also I had many personal reasons, and I can honestly say that I did succeed and Africa has changed my life in a positive way.

How have you benefited from your experience? How have you changed?
Africa has taught me there is so much more to life, there is no need for me to worry over half the things I did. It has made me appreciate all the things I have but also appreciate the people who are different to me. I am a much calmer person and there has not been a day gone by since that I have not thought about Kenya without a smile on my face.

What advice could you offer to someone considering this programme?
It is simple- Just go for it.
