Why do you pay to volunteer?

At Real Gap we want our travellers to know exactly what we’re about, so we make no secret of the fact that we are not a charity. We are team of experts who are brilliant at taking people like you, with time and energy to give, and putting them together with worthwhile projects around the world. Without this support and exposure, many projects would not be able to continue to do the fantastic work that they do.

So why do you have to pay to volunteer? Well, firstly, organising your trip and getting you to your project isn’t cheap and a large part of your fee goes towards the cost of your accommodation, food, local transport and in-country coordinator support. We use locally provided accommodation and resources, so that what you pay makes a difference before you even start. In many cases, we allocate part of your fee to the project you work on as well as other projects around the world.

Secondly, we spend a lot of time researching and finding projects that really need your support, and ensuring that you have all the relevant information you need before you leave. Without this, it would be too easy for your valuable time to be wasted on projects that don’t really need your help. This also means that the communities we work with get ongoing, sustainable support rather than one-off projects that provide only a temporary solution to the challenges that they face.

Finally, the project you work on may end up being in some distant corner of the planet, often in rural and remote areas, and in such locations, the unexpected can happen. This is of course part of the adventure, but if you ever need help, then with Real Gap you know that somebody is on the end of a phone 24/7. As part of the TUI Travel PLC group, our security and global support network can help you wherever you are.

So, if you travel with us be aware that you’re not giving your money to a charity but better still, you’re giving a more valuable currency - your time, to the people who need it most.

For more information about where exactly your money goes, take a look at our Why Pay to Volunteer guide.  Don’t want to just take our word for it? Find out what our in-country partners have to say.
