Wild Coast Wildlife Conservation Project
As a volunteer in South Africa you will see your passion and hard work materialise and contribute towards vital and long-term development schemes, aimed at maintaining the private game reserve, and ensuring the safety of the African wildlife, within the Wild Coast area in South Africa.
Each day will vary in a range of activities, which will see you working as part of an integral team amongst a stunning backdrop of the Wild Coast. At weekends, you will also get to explore and enjoy this area, making the most of all of the excursions available.
Volunteer RoleYou can expect to take part in the following activities:
- Fence patrols for snares and threats to wildlife, fence management and maintenance
- Alien vegetation and soil erosion control
- Game counts and wildlife research and monitoring
- Interaction experiences at the elephant sanctuary
- Working at the lion cub rearing centre
- Environmental lectures and wildlife management skills
- African night out under the stars
- Alternative quad biking bush experience
- Bush walks and game drives: Species identification and interpretation
- Cultivation of indigenous plants and help develop the nursery. These plants will be used to rehabilitate erosion sites as well as alien vegetation sites.
Project LocationThis programme is situated in the Wild Coast area, between Durban and East London on the east coast of South Africa. The Wild Coast region is located in what was the Transkei homeland and boasts some of the most dramatic coastline in Africa.
Accommodation & MealsThe base camp is a permanent Safari tented camp in a stunning and peaceful bush setting. The area around the camp is excellent for wildlife viewing on the reserve. The tents are spacious and sleep up to 5. They are extremely comfortable and fully equipped, with beds and wardrobes etc, each with its own private deck overlooking the African bush.
The game reserve provides you with three meals a day. There will be times when you will be expected to make packed lunches should your work have you out in the field that day.
