Your Typical Day-to-Day Activities It’s important to remember that this is a game reserve and you should be prepared for the unexpected. For example, a lecture may be postponed if a herd of elephants are close by, or you wake up to the roar of lions just outside the camp!
Each day can vary considerably, and your activities will reflect the day-to-day requirements of the reserve.
7am: Take a bush walk, which can last between 1.5 – 3hours
10am: Breakfast
11am: Lectures
1pm: Lunch and chill out or study time
4-6pm: Bush work or walks
8pm: Dinner
10pm: Occasionally you may take a night drive, for example if you hear elephants nearby
11pm: Bedtime, possibly under the stars on the lookout tower
PLEASE NOTE: It is important to have an open mind and flexible attitude from the moment you arrive in Africa. Your days are likely to be a lot less structured than you are used to and the pace of life is much slower than the developed world.
The locals famously speak of ‘Africa Time’; which sums up the relaxed attitude to life, so just enjoy the laid back atmosphere and be prepared for some hard work too. As previous volunteers will attest to, if you put 100% effort into a programme, you will reap the considerable rewards!
The sense of achievement and knowledge that you have gained from your time at the project will stay with you forever.
