Project Location
The centre is situated in the northern Peten region of Guatemala, just 10 minutes boat ride from the tourist town of Flores, and 45 kms from Tikal.

Guatemala
Guatemala, in the Mayan heartland, is Central America’s best-kept secret. As well as lively markets and world famous colourful textiles, it boasts the continent’s highest and most active volcanoes and outstanding natural beauty; from rugged mountains to tropical rainforests. There is an intriguing mix of cultures, influenced by a turbulent and fascinating past. Locals take pride in their traditions and many still wear the colourful, intricately handcrafted costumes of their ancestors. If it’s culture you are after then Guatemala is the place for you.

Weather
Guatemala has been referred to as the land of eternal spring. However, for the Peten, this can be misleading. It can often be quite hot and humid, equivalent to a steamy summer’s day in England, though the jungle surrounding the Rescue Centre tends to keep things tolerable. Here is a quick summary of the weather conditions.
    • Rainiest months: July to December
    • Coldest months: December to February (everything’s relative!)
    • Hottest months: April to June
The humidity is high most of the year with the exception of the cooler months. In the hotter months, be prepared with lots of insect repellent, tropical antihistamines and lightweight, quick drying clothing. In Dec-Feb, it can be cooler at night and we recommend that you bring a light sleeping bag or sweater.

Free Time
Many volunteers who travel to Guatemala visit Antigua first. Antigua is a beautiful colonial city only 45 minutes from Guatemala City and is a nice place to get acclimatised and use as a base to travel to other parts of the country.

Getting There
You will need to fly to Guatemala City airport where you will be met and taken to a hotel in Guatemala City for one night. The next day you will be picked up from the hotel and taken to the airport for a flight to Flores. Please be aware that you will need to have $200 US to pay at the airport for your flight to Flores. On arrival at Flores you will be met by our onsite staff who will take you to the rehabilitation centre.
