You do what? Jane Mclellan, 31, general manager - Real Gap
Jane McLellan, 31, general manager - Real Gap has one of the coolest jobs on record.
Jane has some of the most interesting versions of “doing business” that have ever been recorded! Three years ago, Jane was in the Rajasthan desert, India developing a programme for Real Gap to improve the living conditions of the communities there. Sitting with a family who had sent their child to the local school to learn English with us, Jane was offered a cup of tea. It was only after she accepted tea WITH milk that she became aware of the family goat being brought round to oblige!
Two years ago Jane got to visit Borneo to develop the Orang-utan Experience programme. Jane explains, “Floating down the river on a long boat with rainforests all around and orang-utan hanging around was very surreal. The day ended with me drinking the local spirit with the chief of the longhouse tribes.”
Jane adds, “Of course it isn't all travel but it is a lot of fun to work in this industry. There is never a dull moment in the office either. Last week we took a call from someone asking if their cat could go backpacking with them! My particular favourite was the call asking to buy a pygmy elephant from Malaysia to have as a household pet!”
Real Gap is the leading gap travel organiser offering the widest and most diverse range of programmes. These include: - volunteering, conservation, adventure travel and expeditions, sports, teaching English, round the world, paid working holidays and learning.
Real Gap has expanded the original concept of “life-changing” travel opportunities, and now offers around 500 projects and gap year travel ideas covering 45 countries over six continents.
