Youth Outreach Programme Buenos Aires
As a volunteer you will be directly involved with mentoring and educating the children & teens, with the aim to equip them with the necessary tools for success in life. Most importantly, the children will appreciate the simplest of things the most – having fun!
Argentina’s recent recession has led to increased disparity between the rich and poor classes. Consequently, the nation’s youth have faced the brunt of the problems, and many have lost the desire and/or resources to attend school, seek higher education or maintain suitable employment.
The centre dedicates itself to transforming the understandably negative attitude of the youth from disadvantaged areas, by providing education, job training, career advice, and economic support. The centre also acts as an affordable day-care centre for parents who struggle to work a full time job & look after their children.
Project Age Limit Minimum 18 years. Maximum decided on potential participants’ health.
The Volunteer Programme This project provides you with the opportunity to help children and teenagers in Argentina who are at risk. You will be working hands on at community centres, soup kitchens, shelters and halfway houses. Your task and schedule will vary depending on project needs at the time and volunteers need to be flexible. First and foremost, you will be an important role model for the children that attend the centre and your main duties will include organising activities for the children, conducting educational workshops and preparing meals for the children.
Your daily activities may include:
• Organising youth educational and/or recreational activities • Playing games and sports with the children • Giving informal English lessons • Collecting donations of food, clothing and other materials • Developing and teaching special workshops e.g. drama, dance, songs, art, languages • Preparing and serving meals and snacks • Working on administrative tasks • Organising field trips Project Support Throughout your stay in Argentina you will have the support and guidance of our coordinator and team. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.
In addition you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
Project Orientation On your first day of the project, you will be given an extensive orientation to familiarise you with your new surroundings. You will be informed of local customs, and how to get around using the extensive public transport network. A project coordinator will also meet you to explain your role as a volunteer.
Accommodation There are two options open for accommodation, depending on which package you choose. For the language school and volunteering package, you will be staying with an Argentinian host family. Our host families are carefully screened and must meet stringent requirements before being accepted onto the project. All are middle-class and live in safe homes, and are close friends of the school staff. The distance from the school varies from about 20-40 minutes by bus. You will be given a key to your host family's home so you can come and go as you please.
The family will provide two meals a day, and a private room with a shared bathroom. They will speak Spanish most of the time, to help you learn the language and get the most out of the programme. There will be at least one member of the family that speaks English if need be.
If you choose the volunteering project alone, you will be staying at a hostel with breakfast included. Commute time to the project can be 30-60 minutes. Cooking dinner and washing up will unfortunately then be your own responsibility!
