Zambia Medical Programme
As a volunteer, you will spend every morning in the clinic or hospital you are assigned to. This gives you the chance to both make a positive impact on the health service in Livingstone and to gain unique medical experience. Your afternoons are then spent on one of our fantastic community development schemes.
The Medical Clinic During the week each morning, you will assist staff at one different clinics, health centres and local clinics in Livingstone, as well as the General Hospital (for those volunteers with medical qualifications). These clinics and centres are primary healthcare facilities and the first point of call for un-well residents in the area. Here decisions are made as to whether patients need just reassurance and support, treatment, observation, or emergency referral to a hospital. Your assistance is invaluable in the following areas:
- Out patient department
- Under 5’s department
- Maternity Ward
- Observation Wards
- Laboratory
- HIV/AIDS Support Groups
- Community Outreach
After having spent the morning at a school, you will have the opportunity to help out the local community in different project areas in the afternoon. You will rotate between some of the following community projects:
- Elephant Pepper Project: aims to reduce farmers/elephant conflict
- Home-Based Care Project: providing food and medical supplies advice on nutrition and the correct way to take their medication
- HIV/AIDS education
- Building and Painting Schools
- Sports Coaching and Art Clubs
- Reading Clubs and Adult Literacy schemes
You can choose from a huge number of activities such as bungee jumping, white water rafting, horse and elephant rides to do in your spare time.
LocationLivingstone, Zambia only 6km away from the mighty Victoria Falls
Accommodation and MealsDuring your time at the project, you will be staying at one of our three volunteer houses. Each bedroom will be shared between 3-8 volunteers. You will be provided with three meals a day throughout your stay in Zambia.
Please note: For non-qualified volunteers, it would be advisable for you to take a short course in First Aid or do some research on taking blood pressure, HIV/Aids, malaria and TB infections if you want to maximise your assistance in the Clinic.
