This project is a wonderful community programme, combining a variety of vital medical opportunities in four different health centres and clinics, whilst also allowing you to partake in a range of activities with young children and communities.

Zambia Medical Volunteers

Volunteer Role

During the week each morning, you will assist staff at one different clinics, health centres and local clinics in Livingstone, as well as the General Hospital (for those volunteers with medical qualifications). These clinics and centres are primary healthcare facilities and the first point of call for unwell residents in the area. Here decisions are made as to whether patients need just reassurance and support, treatment, observation, or emergency referral to a hospital.

Your assistance is invaluable in the following areas:

  • Out patient department
  • Under 5s department
  • Maternity Ward
  • Observation Wards
  • Laboratory
  • HIV/AIDS Support Groups
  • Community Outreach
After having spent the morning at a clinic or hospital, you will have the opportunity to help out the local community in different project areas in the afternoon.

You will rotate between some of the following community projects:

  • Elephant Pepper Project: aims to reduce farmers/elephant conflict
  • Home-Based Care Project: providing food and medical supplies advice on nutrition and the correct way to take their medication
  • HIV/AIDS education
  • Building and Painting Schools
  • Sports Coaching and Art Clubs
  • Reading Clubs and Adult Literacy schemes

What’s Included in the Programme

  • Project Fee: this entails financing that goes directly back into the project that you are involved with. This fee facilitates funding for items such as building materials, supplies, foodstuffs, etc. Project fees are also used to buy vehicles, equipment and the development of new housing for volunteers to provide for the expansion of the project.
  • All airport transfers from Livingstone International Airport upon arrival and departure
  • Arrival orientation 
  • Daily transfers to and from your projects during your stay
  • All accommodation and meals during your placement
  • Weekly laundry service during your stay
  • Assistance in your projects by your designated volunteer coordinators 
  • 24-hour support from your local co-ordinator

What’s Not Included in the Programme

  • Personal travel insurance for the duration of your placement, which must include cover for repatriation
  • All transport by air or bus to Livingstone
  • All items of a personal nature, such as curios, gifts, clothing etc
  • E-mail/Internet and telephone calls
  • Soft drinks, wines an spirits 
  • All visas for border crossings
  • Any excursions over and above your planned itinerary in Zambia e.g. visit to the Victoria Falls, white water rafting, etc
