Zambia Sports and Community Project
Join the Zambia Sports Coaching Programme and help hundreds of young children orphaned by AIDS. Working in a school and at a local orphanage, you can provide the much-needed support and guidance these children need. You have the chance to make a real impact on the lives of these children and to assist with their learning experience.
Zambia's lack of financial resources have forced the government to operate a “hot seating” system whereby children take it in turns to go to school. Some schools are forced to operate 3 separate school sessions each day, meaning two thirds of children are not attending school at any one time. Help to coach sports and offer a structured teaching environment for young children, whom would otherwise be left to entertain themselves each day.
Volunteer RoleWorking with the local schools in the morning, you will help to teach a range of sports as part of each child's daily instruction. Before the involvement of volunteers, sports received little or no attention in schools, so you will play a major role in the continued physical education of each child.
In the afternoon, you will attend the local community centre/orphanage and help to organise daily games and sporting activities for the orphans. Past volunteers have set up football teams who have played in local leagues.
Accommodation & Meals You will stay in a specially built volunteer house, with other volunteers from your programme. This is a large, four-bedroom house, with an extra 3 bedrooms and 1 shower adjacent to this, located in the quiet suburbs of Livingston, just 5 minutes from the project. The house has a large garden, a large living/dining area and kitchen together with 2 bathrooms.
You will be provided with three meals a day, and will have full access to your kitchen in the house. Breakfast usually consists of cereals/porridge, toast, tea and coffee. For lunch you will be given sandwiches to take with you, or eat back at the house. Dinner is cooked for you.
