What were some of the highlights of your placement with us??
I was given the opportunity to watch 9 women giving birth including a C-Section, which I found very fascinating, even though it has likely put me off!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of things we did through the week, including visiting peoples homes in the slums. It was a huge eye-opener. I also really enjoyed playing Frisbee with everyone and the barbecues on a Friday night helped me feel really welcome.
During your time on the program did you ever feel unsafe? No I found it an exceptionally safe environment, especially with gates and guards patrolling the area. The people I met in general were very warm and welcoming, I didn't feel out of place or get approached for the wrong reasons. I felt that the driving was very safe despite bad roads. |
How has living in Africa for this period influenced your perspectives and outlook on life?
Seeing the way people live in Africa, with a humbling attitude towards life really puts things in perspective. I feel that in some parts of Africa life has really thrown a lot at them, but despite all this generally they have a positive attitude and are very strong in mind as well as family oriented people knowing where the true values lie.
It helps me by observing different attitudes from different backgrounds, to learn how lucky I am and to appreciate what is important in life. |

Could you please explain your true feelings and thoughts about this Program?? What do you think you gained from your volunteer experience?
My experience in Kenya far exceeded my expectations. I didn't expect to be given the opportunity to really see things the way I did. I felt that the doctors at the hospitals were very open minded and willing for the volunteers to learn as much as they could by observing operations and allowing us to help hands on. I feel that I have seen a lot of things I would never have had the opportunity to see otherwise.
The experience helps me to understand more about what I would like to do in the future with setting up my own project. |
I also met some wonderful people, including the staff who are very warm and welcoming. All in all I don't feel that I could have asked for anything more, everything was very well organised and structured to get the best out of our experiences.
