Destination info

Kangaroo Island (or KI as the locals know it) really is an unspoilt wilderness, with a quarter of the island conserved in protected parks providing a home to many different endangered animals. Thankfully, the island has been spared the damage done on the mainland by foxes and rabbits, ensuring the integrity of native bushland.

The Wildlife Sanctuary is in the western end of the Island, and close to Flinders Chase National Park, Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, Kelly Hill Caves and only a short distance to Seal Bay. Included in your stay will be a complementary trip to Flinders Chase to visit Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch.

  • Location: Western Kangaroo Island, South Australia

The Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at the Western end of Kangaroo Island, South Australia. The Sanctuary was first established in 1997, covers an area of 3,845 hectares, with 14km of spectacular coastline and is the largest privately owned conservation property on KI. Within the sanctuary you will find many different species including wallabies, kangaroos, pigmy possums, echidnas, koalas and possums. The area is also a bird watcher's paradise, with large and small species calling the sanctuary home.

The sanctuary’s conservation work is funded by beachfront accommodation; a backpacker lodge, guided nocturnal tours and self guided koala tours. This is truly an exceptional place with its abundant wildlife and pristine coastline. The animals live free in their natural habitat and environment, which the sanctuary offers them. Nocturnal tours are conducted each evening to give visitors to the Island the ultimate wildlife experience.

All volunteers are picked up in the morning from the main town of Kingscote or KI airport by the project staff to spend a few hours in Kingscote before being transferred to the Wildlife Sanctuary.

As a volunteer, you will work various hours, weather and temperature permitting, five days a week, doing all sort of different duties depending on the priority at the time.

The feral proof fence, which is vital to maintaining the habitats within the sanctuary, is checked each morning with a drive around. Once a week you will need to walk around the fence to check for minor damages at the base. Each morning the volunteers will need to check on the activities on the Koala Avenue for any public hazards and rubbish as well as making sure that the bird feeders and water containers are full.

One regular daily activity will involve watering the Tree Factory where the seeds and plants are growing ready for planting.

Some days volunteers may be asked to assist with the cleaning of accommodation units on the beachfront on Farmhouse Hostel. This is crucial work for the sanctuary, as much of its funding comes from these units. Depending on the time of year, firewood collection and cutting may be needed.

Revegetation of the sanctuary and other ground maintenance, including clearing and hazard reduction on the paths, is always ongoing at the sanctuary. This is vitally important to help maintain the habitat and attract tourism to the area. During these activities volunteers are encouraged to interact with the many international and local visitors to the sanctuary, have a chat and show them around.

Volunteers are encouraged to help marshal the nocturnal tours that run each evening, however they are optional so they can choose to relax instead. Feed drops for the local wild kangaroos and wallabies takes place each evening before each tour. This is a remarkable experience and a highlight for many, as it is a truly unique opportunity to get close to wild large kangaroos.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Volunteering at the sanctuary was amazing. I did things you wouldn't usually be able to do. I loved looking after the kangaroos, and assisting on the nocturnal tour. I just enjoyed taking part in something that, no matter how small the job, it still made a difference.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Kangaroo Island was the highlight of my whole triip in Australia so far! The volunteering made me feel worthwhile. Physically it was tiring but mentally all the more worthwhile! Highlights were the family-like staff and all the fun around the work. Hanson Bay was fantastic and lots of our free time was spend there! I've made friends for life, changed my choice of what to study, learned an enormous amount of information about the animals and it made me realise how important conservation work is!

What top 3 tips would you give other travellers?

1. Nothing is boring, it is what you make of it. Be open to other experiences and pull through when you don't think you can anymore! Afterwards you'll feel all the better! 2. Prepare for a different pace of life at Kangaroo Island. While the work might me hard at times, the working hours are very relaxed. If you want to go fast, do some travelling first! 3. Buy a good camera! You'll see so many amazing animals and nature so be sure to take great pictures.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Being able to see 20 koalas every day, doing things that most people don't see. Learning about the different animals in the sanctuary. Having the 2 dogs around all the time. Having the opportunity to see other parts of kangaroo Island. In 11 years I can look on google maps and say "I planted those trees"

What top 3 tips would you give other travellers?

Do this in the middle of your travels as a break, people who started their travels with this wanted to move on much quicker, but I found it nice to stop for a month after constantly moving around for 3 months. 2 weeks is too short, 3 or 4 is better. Don't wait for something to happen, ask for something to do

How would you sum up your trip in 10 words?

Fun managers, great people, amazing wildlife, rewarding experience, gorgeous beach.
