Trip Info

This project’s main objective is to teach the children reading, writing and speaking English skills, which helps them to get employment in their adult lives. Through conversations and playful dynamic activities the kids will begin to feel more comfortable with the language and will begin using it more regularly. The project encourages interesting and playful activities, showing the children how much fun learning a language can be!

You will have the opportunity to teach at the local School or teaching Centre and will be able to teach a variety of English-based subjects. You’ll also be able to teach whole classes on your own or with the help of another Volunteer.

English is a very important language that these children will really benefit from knowing in their adult lives. Being part of this community gives them the opportunity in learning different traditions, culture and perspectives as well as learning the language. Volunteers working in the community encourage the children to seek better opportunities in their future in both a personal and professional level.

The project takes place on week days from Monday to Friday. You’ll head to different community schools for a few hours in the morning. Pre-school has students between the ages of 4 and 7 years old and primary school has students between 7 to 14 years old. Each group has approximately 35 bright and cheerful children.

Teaching experience is not required to attend the project, however, it is beneficial. For those who are less experienced, you will still be able to get involved; however, will have the assistance of other volunteers when teaching classes.

Although the school has set a curriculum, there aren’t any set program activities, so we do ask that you bring your creativity to the table when planning your classes. Games, colouring, singing and dancing are all welcome, as well as anything else you can think will help teach the children in a fun, challenging and rewarding way. Whatever activity you choose to do, preparation for your classes is very important.

Before getting stuck in with the hard work volunteering, you’ll have a whole week of getting used to the Balinese culture and seeing its beautiful sights.

Bahasa language classes will be provided to get you up to speed with the basics, so that your time teaching and communicating with the locals is made that little bit easier.

Throughout the week, you’ll get to eat lots of Balinese cuisine and will be taught to cook it during traditional cooking classes.

You will visit Ubud market, take part in walking tours, learn to speak the language and if that wasn’t enough culture for you, you will also get to witness traditional Balinese dancing.

Please note that there a number of religious holidays in Bali from the end of March and end of October 2017. During these periods the teaching projects are closed and alternative activities will be arranged for volunteers; these could include renovation work in the local communities. Additionally there are also a number of festival days throughout the year which will also affect the opening of schools and as such teaching projects will not operate on these days, however it is great opportunity to learn and experience Balinese culture and tradition.

Your First Day

After a week of culture and sightseeing, you’ll be eager to get stuck in with your teaching volunteer program.

Breakfast will be served at around 8:00am and your working day will begin around 9:00am.

You will be given the curriculum in the morning and for the first few hours of the day you’ll be working with other volunteers to prepare for lessons which you will conduct in the afternoon. We encourage you to make your lessons as fun, challenging and worthwhile as possible. Songs, dancing and games are often used to help teach the children English and we like the lessons to be creative and entertaining as well as educational.

Lunch will be served around midday and you’ll be able to help look after the children and relax a little before your lesson starts.

Around 2pm on your first day, you will begin teaching the lesson that you prepared earlier in the day. With the help of the staff and other volunteers, you’ll ensure that the students are engaged in the lesson and encouraged to take part in the activities.

On your first day you be required to have a meeting around 5:30pm to get feedback from the staff on your first day of teaching and suggestions on how to improve throughout your time at the project. Don’t worry, this isn’t a test, it’s just a quick update and is a great chance to ask any questions that you have thought of during your first day.

The Following Days/Weeks on the Project

The rest of your time at the project will follow a very similar pattern. Breakfast will be served at 8am each morning and your working day will begin at 9am. On some days you will start teaching at 2pm after lunch and on some occasions this will begin at 4pm.

You won’t have a catch up meeting every day; however, on Fridays you’ll have a meeting after teaching to discuss the program changes for the following week.

Accommodation & Meals

The accommodation is typical Balinese style and located among Balinese compounds where you will get the chance to interact with local families.

The accommodation is basic but clean and rooms are based on 4 to 8 people sharing and all have a fan. Toilet facilities are western style, shared with other volunteers and there is warm water and electricity available. Rooms have bunk beds made from authentic bamboo.

WI-FI is available in the volunteer house. Mosquito nets are not provided.

Three meals per day during the week and two meals a day during weekends are included. You will be required to make your way to the canteen which is located in the village, approximately 5-10 minutes’ walk from the volunteer house.

The food is mostly vegetarian, however, meat dishes are provided at times. Food is typically Balinese cuisine, which consists of dishes with rice, noodles, salad, vegetables, spring rolls and curry.
