Help make a difference in Cambodia schools! Assist the teachers at a local Pagoda (temple) school and at a unique floating school during the week, then see the incredible temples of Angkor and so much more in your free time.

The teachers at these schools are overstretched and desperately need your help to teach the children some basic English and computer skills and much more. English has become an increasingly helpful language to learn for Cambodian children as the tourist industry grows in the country.

Giving your time to this wonderfully friendly nation of people will be a really rewarding experience that you'll never forget.

Destination info

Cambodia lies on the Indo-Chinese peninsula. It is bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

With a population of over 14 million Cambodia is a small country bordered by Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. It has long been a place of great interest for travellers from far and wide and for good reason with its incredible cultural diversity.

Cambodia is a fascinating country to tour with the rich history of the Khmer Empire influencing world-renowned sites like the temples surrounding Angkor. Sadly its more recent, turbulent past witnessed the loss of nearly two million people during the Khmer Rouge regime.

In spite of this, the country remains an enthralling place to explore with friendly locals, tropical climate and beautiful wildlife.

  • Location: Chung Kneas

You will spend your mornings teaching at a local Pagoda (temple) school and your afternoons teacing at the Floating school.

The Pagoda school is close to your accommodation. There are more than 20 children that attend the Pagoda school aged between six and twelve years old.

The floating school is located in the floating village of Chung Kneas and boasts a population of approximately 5,000 people. The school floats on the Tonle Sap River, moving up and down depending on the season (the rainy season runs from May to August.) Built in 2003 the school has three buildings that float independently, two are classrooms and teachers’ office, and the other is for sport and recreation. There are currently 86 students, with five teachers. This means that the teacher’s time can be stretched and that not all children receive the attention they deserve.

Teaching will be the main focus of your role. You will be responsible for organising and taking your own class. The activities that you will running will depend on the needs of the children and the classes at the time (so please be flexible); however they may include the following:

  • Arranging lesson plans
  • Teaching basic English
  • Playing with the children
  • Teaching the children songs
  • Teaching art lessons (drawing, painting, hand sewing, etc.)
  • Creating new activities

Your typical working hours at the project will be Monday to Friday 8 - 11am at the Pagoda school and 2 - 4.30pm at the Floating school, leaving your weekends free to explore the area. Transport to and from the projects will either be bike, tuktuk or walking.

Please note: Itineraries and activities are subject to change.

Additional Information & FAQs

Minimum age

Minimum age 18 years old, maximum decided on potential participants health.

Accommodation

Whilst you are on your project, you will stay in a unique and peaceful hotel. It is situated away from the hustle and bustle of Siem Reap just a short drive from the airport (approx. 20 mins), Angkor Wat is 20 minutes away and the centre of Siem Reap is approximately 10 minutes away. The beautiful building occupied by the hotel owners was built in 1988 as a cultural centre to teach aspiring artists the gentle but exacting art of traditional Apsara dancing and displays many elements of traditional Khmer architecture.

You will share an air-conditioned room with another volunteer. You will either have an ensuite in your room or it will be adjacent to your room and access will be exclusive use to the occupants in your room. The hotel offers internet access, a bar and restaurant and a large salt water swimming pool is also provided for use in your free time. You are able to leave your valuables with reception who will store them in the hotel safe.

Meals

Breakfast will be provided for you. For lunch we recommend that you buy something from the village and take it with you to the project. For dinner, you can either eat at the hotel restaurant or head into the city to try the wide variety of foods on offer at the many restaurants including Khmer, Chinese and western meals. The local food is very cheap to buy and a two-course meal will cost next to nothing!

Orientation

Once met by a representative of our overseas partner, you will be transferred from the airport to your accommodation where you can relax and familiarise yourself with your surroundings.

The following day the co-ordinator will provide you with information about Siem Reap, Cambodia, your placement, safety and emergency, restaurants, Internet cafes, and anything else you would like to know. Please take this opportunity to ask any questions that you may have about the area or your placement.

Please note: You will need to send us a copy of your CV to pass onto the project to take part in the volunteering.

Advice & Safety

Throughout your programmes you will have the support and guidance of the programme co-ordinator and team. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.

You will be assigned a personal travel adviser who will co-ordinate your programme with you. Feel free to contact them at any time before you go, or when you are on your travels.

In addition, you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
