The teachers at these schools are overstretched and desperately need your help to teach the children some basic English and computer skills and much more. English has become an increasingly helpful language to learn for Cambodian children as the tourist industry grows in the country.

Giving your time to this wonderfully friendly nation of people will be a really rewarding experience that you'll never forget.

What will I be doing?

  • Volunteering (2 to 8 Weeks)

Volunteering: 2 to 8 Weeks

Destination info

Cambodia lies on the Indo-Chinese peninsula. It is bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

Still recovering from its turbulent past when nearly two million civilians died during the Khmer Rouge regime led by Pol Pot, Cambodia is a very deprived, yet fascinating destination that offers mesmerising sights to explore as well as a diverse culture and an affable civilisation.

Phnom Penh is as exotic as it sounds. The Royal Palace and the Mekong River means Phnom Penh is one of Asia’s undiscovered gems. Phnom Penh is a vibrant, busy city with motorbikes whizzing around and scents waft around from the market stalls. Is not just another modern Asian capital; it is a more traditional place that travellers flock to.

  • Location: Chung Kneas
You will spend your mornings teaching at a local Pagoda (temple) school and your afternoons teaching at the floating school.

The Pagoda (temple) school is close to your accommodation. There are approximately 20 children that attend the Pagoda school aged between 6 and 12 years old.

As a volunteer you will be giving essential support to the teachers that really need your help. You will be responsible for organising and taking your own class. The activities you will run will depend on the needs of the children and the classes at the time so please be flexible; they may include the following:

  • Arranging lesson plans
  • Teaching basic English
  • Playing with the children
  • Teaching the children songs
  • Teaching art lessons (drawing, painting, hand sewing, etc.)
  • Creating new activities
Your typical working hours at the project will be Monday to Friday 8am-11am at the Pagoda school and 2pm-4.30pm at the floating school, leaving your weekends free to explore the area. Transport to and from the projects will either be bike, tuktuk or walking.

Please note: Itineraries and activities are subject to change.

Additional Information & FAQs

Minimum age

Minimum age 18 years old, maximum decided on potential participants health.

Accommodation

Whilst you are on your project, you will stay in a unique and peaceful hotel. It is situated away from the hustle and bustle of Siem Reap just a short drive from the airport (approx. 20 mins), Angkor Wat is 20 minutes away and the centre of Siem Reap is approximately 10 minutes away. The beautiful building occupied by the hotel owners was built in 1988 as a cultural centre to teach aspiring artists the gentle but exacting art of traditional Apsara dancing and displays many elements of traditional Khmer architecture.

You will share an air-conditioned room with another volunteer. You will either have an ensuite in your room or it will be adjacent to your room and access will be exclusive use to the occupants in your room. The hotel offers internet access, a bar and restaurant and a large salt water swimming pool is also provided for use in your free time. You are able to leave your valuables with reception who will store them in the hotel safe.

Meals

Breakfast will be provided for you. For lunch we recommend that you buy something from the village and take it with you to the project. For dinner, you can either eat at the hotel restaurant or head into the city to try the wide variety of foods on offer at the many restaurants including Khmer, Chinese and western meals. The local food is very cheap to buy and a two-course meal will cost next to nothing!

Advice & Safety

Throughout your programmes you will have the support and guidance of the programme co-ordinator and team. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.

You will be assigned a personal travel adviser who will co-ordinate your programme with you. Feel free to contact them at any time before you go, or when you are on your travels.

In addition, you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
