No visit to North America would be complete without time spent in British Columbia, Canada. Its awe-inspiring scenery will take your breath away and the Canada wildlife will astound you. From huge moose to grizzly bears, you’re in for a real Canadian treat.

 

Saying that, you may not think of Canada as a country in need of volunteer support, however your time and skills will be put to good use by those running valuable community initiatives in Western Canada.

 

There are many different volunteer options for you to choose including wildlife rehabilitation, community work, helping in arts and culture or working with children. You’ll have a detailed orientation which will cover general information about life in Canada, as well as the specifics of your placement such as your role and responsibilities.

Perfect for outdoor and nature lovers, get your hands dirty working on a nature conservation site or wildlife sanctuary. Nature volunteers will help with trail maintenance, work with native plants, gardening, contribute to public education initiatives, fundraising and much more. Wildlife volunteers will work with native species to Canada, helping feed animals and prepare food, cleaning cages, showing visitors around, taking care of injured animals, grounds maintenance and administrative duties.

Working within a gallery you’ll be involved in greeting visitors, answering questions, helping with coat check, working in gift shops and possibly helping with tours for children. You may have the opportunity to direct classes for people with physical and developmental disabilities or senior citizens. Placements are also available in other arts and culture centres and heritage sites.

If you’ve bundles of enthusiasm and energy and experience working with young people then this option is excellent for you! Volunteers can share their skills, patience, and presence with children in a variety of settings:

 

  • Take horseback riding lessons for people with disabilities.
  • Assist in the rehabilitation of youth at risk or people with disabilities through the sport and recreation of sailing.
  • Become a volunteer in a classroom at a pre-school or elementary school.
  • Volunteer at a summer camp (only available through the summer months).

Additional Information & FAQs

Minimum age

Minimum age 18 years old.

 

Accommodation

For the duration of your placement you will stay with a Canadian host family. This is a great way to experience real Canadian life! You will have your own private room. Facilities are shared with the family. Each host family is carefully selected taking into account their genuine desire to share their culture with the participants.

 

Meals

Your host family will provide you with three meals per day. Please inform us if you have any special dietary requirements.

 

Advice & Safety

Throughout your programmes you will have the support and guidance of the programme co-ordinator and team. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.

You will be assigned a personal travel adviser who will co-ordinate your programme with you. Feel free to contact them at any time before you go, or when you are on your travels.

In addition, you will have access to a 24-hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.

Yes you can combine them.

2. Is there an option to just work with wildlife?

On the Nature and Wildlife Volunteer option you will work with native species of Canada, helping feed animals and prepare food, cleaning cages or even help showing visitors around.

No, you will be allocated a host family where you will have your own room.

What were the highlights of your trip?

learning how to examine animals and helping to treat them. meeting a large variety of interesting local volunteers. staying with my lovely host family. Seeing the local sights, e.g skiing lessons on whistler mountain.

What top 3 tips would you give other travellers?

make sure there are other volunteers with the company who will be there at the same time as you. be openminded to everything, the point is to try new things that take you outside of your comfort zone. Go to vancouver in the summer not the winter.

How would you sum up your trip in 10 words?

good experience, lovely host family, multi cultural, idependance, completely different.
