What was your motivation to take a gap break?
I had finally saved enough money to do what I have wanted to do for a long time. The motivation for helping out has been there for a long time.

How did you feel before you joined the programme?
Before I went I was excited of course about what I was letting myself into.

What did you think of the programme?
Mike and the staff are doing an awesome job! Absolutely nothing to complain about while I was there. We were very well taken care of.

What was the most memorable moment of your trip?
There were a pair of 4 year old twins in one of the kindergartens. I attached myself to one of them and it was an unbelievable feeling. I realized how happy they all are - they don't know of any better so they are enjoying what they have. I think the western world could learn from that.

Did your programme and destination meet your expectations? Any anecdotes?
It was better that expected. The beach was as great as it looked. There was a sign about the beach I keep saying in my head - even now months after: Take only pictures and leave only footprints. That was just such a good sign.. don't know why I'm mentioning it here.. somehow it's just stuck in my head!

What was the accommodation like?
Better than expected.

What do you feel you accomplished?
Knowledge about the culture - the people. And the fact that “just” because they have a (what we think) poor life they are so happy! At the same time it made me wonder how on earth it is possible for the western world to live these lives instead of sharing it with the 3rd world, just some of it!! It's not a question that can be answered but it pops up in my head every now and then… Maybe we have the wrong values!!

And most importantly. When I want to complain about small things -like taking the trash out or having too much homework, I think about kids in other places who would do anything to even have trash from their home to carry out into a trashcan or be able to read and go to school!!

How have you benefited from your experience? How have you changed?
The way I look at my life - and the world! In the beginning I felt very guilty about even eating healthy and nutritious food. I realised though that I can't save the world and I just try to help out wherever I can.

What advice could you offer to someone considering this programme?
If you are considering you should ask yourself what is holding you back!! You have looked this up because you want to help out, and believe me you will help out. Just knowing what a difference you are doing, see the smiles of the kids - just hanging out and playing with them is worth it all. Once you are there you want to stay longer and the staff are awesome. Helpful, open and organized!!

GO, GO, GO!
