As a volunteer you'll play a huge role in protecting this environment by helping to collect vital data, observing tropical fish species and conserving the stunning coral reefs. You'll even be taking the plunge and going scuba diving to get a closer look at the underwater world where you'll be taking photos of fish species for identification.

Your contribution really will have an impact for years to come as you'll most importantly be helping to preserve this stunning environment for future generations to enjoy, all whilst having the time of your life on this once in a lifetime trip.

Trip Info

As a volunteer you'll be involved in a range of varied activities. Below are just some of the exciting tasks you could be getting stuck into on this program;

Manta Ray reseach: volunteer tasks include observing the manta rays and studying their behaviour, taking photos of them for species identification and analysing their habitat through swimming and snorkelling with them on a daily basis.

Education programs: all of the education programs are run by volunteers so you could definitely be getting involved with these. Tasks include assisting at awareness evenings in local villages or helping out with the marine environment awareness program in local schools. The idea of these programs is to teach locals sustainable reef practices and teach snorkelling skills

Coral and clam nursery: clams have a purpose which is vital to marine life and coral growth and that is they filter the water and keep it 'clean'. Your task will be to assist a nationwide program to re-introduce and disperse clams including the giant clam Tridacna gigas.

Reef Check Fiji: you will be observing, photographing and recording data on some of the reefs which will provide an insight into the health of the reefs. You will carry out these checks by snorkelling and scuba diving.

As a volunteer you will also be recording information on sharks, rays, turtles and cetaceans spotted during your stay, as well as any other species identified on the endangered lists of Fiji to support protection efforts by the Coral Reef Allowance and Fiji Fisheries.

The project is based in the stunning Yasawa region of Fiji and is working to resolve some major conservation issues in order to project Fiji's incredible marine environment. A lot of the work is research based and involves collecting data by observing manta rays, reef health checks and habitat mapping. The data that is collected by the project is then passed on to nationwide and global organisations such as, Fiji Fisheries, Manta Trust and the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network.

The project is also dedicated to working with the local communities and runs an education teaching program to teach local people about sustainable reef practices. These comprise of awareness evenings in villages and weekly marine and environment awareness programs in local schools.

This is the perfect project for those who want to escape to a paradise island whilst helping out with vital marine conservation work in the Yasawa region of Fiji.

Your activities will be quite varied and you will be getting stuck into a number of tasks. Your activities could include: learning about reef check target species, taking photos of fish for species identification and updating data. You'll also be working within the local community and teaching the locals about sustainable reef practices.

Please note: to take part in the program you must hold a recent PADI Open Water Level scuba diving certificate.

If you don't already hold a PADI Open Water certification, why not stop off in Thailand on your way to Fiji and join one of our Thailand Scuba Diving Courses!

Be prepared to be mesmerised by your beautiful surroundings- you'll definitely have a hard time finding a more spectacular location to live and work in!

The Yasawa Islands are considered to be Fiji's most stunning and it's clear to see why, with picture postcard palm tree lined beaches, sparkling white sand and crystal clear water. You'll be staying in traditional Fijian 'bures' (wood and straw houses) on the stunning Drawqa Island, just seconds from the beach so expect to be drifting off to sleep with the sound of the waves lapping! The resort actually has three beaches in total so take your pick of tanning spots!

What to expect as a volunteer in Fiji

Your day will begin early (...sorry, no lie in!) when you'll be up in time to witness the gorgeous sunrise. You'll be provded with breakfast then you'll hop onto a boat and sail away to the volunteering base where you'll be working for the day.

A typical days volunteering will end mid-afternoon when you'll be transferred back to the accommodation where you'll have time to relax before an evening debrief. Then just sit back, relax and wait for the resort's own chef to serve your dinner- the perfect chance to sample Fiji's finest cuisine! The evenings are normally very chilled out with most people hanging out at the waterfront bar. There is also regular evening entertainment organised by the resort to give you a better insight into the rich Fijian culture, from fire dancing displays to kava ceremonies and traditional Fijian songs and music.

It's not all work and no play on this project. Weekends are your free time to spend as you choose and you certainly won't be short of activities. If you're not too tired from your volunteering and you're ready for adventure then why not go trekking or kayaking? Or if you want to get away from the accommodation you can hop on a boat and explore the nearby islands. If you want to experience more of the local culture then the staff at the accommodation can arrange visits to a local village.

Tired from all your hard work volunteering? There are plenty of tranquil spots around the resort for you to relax and chill out. Swing in a hammock or bask in the sun on the beach.

Want to see more of this incredible country? Why not extend your Fijian adventure and add Fiji Beaches onto the end of your volunteering?
