An exciting and thoroughly rewarding experience awaits you when you decide to become a childcare volunteer in Ghana. Like many countries in the developing world, Ghana has a large number of abandoned children across the country, many of whom, for a variety of reasons have been left to fend for themselves.

This programme gives you the opportunity to help make a difference to the lives of these children, working alongside local staff in a combined childcare centre and school, you’ll be able to give them the extra support and attention that so many are deprived of.

Ghana is in West Africa and renowned for having the warmest, friendliest people. It borders the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Togo and the Atlantic Ocean. Ghana is considered one of the safest places in Africa, with some of the friendliest people on the continent.

Ghanaians are traditionally very welcoming people and they pride themselves on the peaceful state, with very low crime rate.

Accra is Ghana’s capital city and estimated to have a population of around two million. Accra is a large, sprawling city that is developing very fast. It is situated on the coast, with a port and several beach hotels where tourists may stay. Like any African Capital it is large, dusty, energetic, dirty, busy, and yet charming and unique!

  • Location: Accra, Ghana

Like in many developing countries worldwide, Ghana has a large number of children who have been either, abandoned or neglected or whose parents have died, and as such are in desperate need of care and support. There are a growing number of care centres and schools across Ghana which are full to bursting point with children who are in need of your help. With staff often over-worked and stretched to the limit, they are unable to give the children in their care any extra support, attention or one to one time that they need and deserve. This is where you come in, as a volunteer you’ll be giving some much needed support and assistance to the children at these centres.

You’ll be based in a combined care centre and school in the capital city of Accra, working with both children who come to the centre and school on a daily basis. Some children live permanently at the centre. The ages of the children who live at the centre and attend school range considerably, with anything from 3 up to 16 years of age.

Your Role: 2 - 12 weeks

With smiles aplenty from the children at the centres, a very warm welcome is sure to await you at this Ghana Childcare programme.

Your role as a volunteer on this programme will primarily be acting as a carer or as a teaching assistant in the adjacent school. Your help and support is invaluable to both the staff and the children that you will be working alongside.

By volunteering on this programme, you are helping to free up some of the time of the staff and enable the children to give children extra support and some one-to-one attention that they may otherwise go without. Through being a fluent English speaker, you can also help out with English lessons for the children, giving them an extremely valuable skill for life as well giving them a huge confidence boost!

Creativity is key on this programme, every child has varying needs so classes can be very unpredictable; the more interactive and fun you can make each day, the more you and the children will get out of it. Each day will be different, but as you get to know the children and start to develop your own teaching methods, you will soon reap the rewards and benefits. You’ll be joining in with games and fun activities with the children and hopefully introducing some of your own new ideas along the way, as well as giving them some basic English lessons; you’ll really be helping to enrich the classes and care that the children receive. You may also have the opportunity to get involved in some renovations at the school, repairing classrooms or giving them a new lick of paint and maybe the odd mural or two to brighten everything up.

As with any volunteering around the world, we ask that you remain flexible and open minded throughout which will help you to get the most out of your time away.

For the first few days of your programme, you will have a fantastic orientation to really help you get settled in to your new surroundings and get to grips with how things work in Ghana. You’ll receive an orientation briefing covering lots of useful information relating to your programme and Ghana in general. In addition you’ll also be taken on a tour of Accra including visits to the craft markets, shops, bars, banks and of course the lovely local beach!

Your volunteer project will normally run from Monday to Friday with a typical day at the project starting at around 8:30am and finishing at approximately 2:00pm, giving you plenty of time in the afternoon to prepare and plan your activities for the following days.

Please note: During August schools are closed for the holiday period, which means normal lessons do not run. If you are volunteering during this month you will be helping out on the recess program which runs throughout August and will also give volunteers a chance to get invovled with teaching.

In addition to your main placement, you will have the opportunity to teach classes, or assist in teaching classes with our football school based in Teshie- Accra. With a western education, you will be able to contribute massively to the standard of tuition that the students receive. Subject areas include English (language and literature), math, science, journalism, business, IT, RE and a whole variety of extra-curricular activities.

In addition, you can get involved with coaching your favourite sport in the afternoon helping disadvantage children reach their full potential in Sports, Education and Health using sports as a tool to achieve that.

The after school project was launched in recognition of the need to support children with their education as well as providing them with sporting opportunities.

We are aware of the pressure that young sporting talent put on themselves whilst trying to fulfil their sporting ambitions. This determination to succeed in sport is often pursued to the detriment of children’s school work. Put simply – when you’re eager to hit the football pitch after school, homework is the last thing on your mind!

The after school programme offers homework help, extra tuition and exam revision for those children who may otherwise struggle to keep up due to their dedication to sport.

This is a great opportunity to share your knowledge with disadvantage but enthusiastic children in Teshie-Accra area.

- getting to see the learning transformations in the children you tutor - getting to travel the country at weekends - experiencing all this with so many amazing people

I wish I'd gone longer!!!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

- throw yourself in to everything - buy 'pedi soft' when you're out there. It's a mosquito repellent that works better than the ridiculously expensive deet, and is a lotion that actually smells good and makes your skin soft. All the locals use it, it's cheap and it works amazingly well!!! Trust me - I got eaten alive until I started to use it - go in with an open mind. The more relaxed and open you are the more you'll fall in love with the country, the people, the kids and the life style
