Trip Summary

Ever wanted to take a short break doing something worthwhile? Community development in India introduces you to friendly locals and their culture and enables you to gain volunteer experience.

Reach out to disadvantaged communities by lending your time, support and encouragement to children and adults in Goa.  Despite Goa’s reputation as a prominent tourist destination, much of the region remains extremely poor. Your language skills, maths prowess and all-round enthusiasm will help to brighten up the lives of people living in poverty.

Your time in Goa won't be all volunteering; you will also have the great opportunity to relax with three one hour yoga and meditation sessions at the beginning of your second week. You will also have a chance to see and learn more about Indian culture and Goa's sights with and Indian Cooking workshop, trips to see Old Goa's churches, museums, spice plantations and even see a Bollywood movie. All this and a boat cruise with dinner, music and dance show onboard at the end of your first week at the project.

Destination info

India is the second most populated country in the world, just behind China. Its slogan, ‘Unity in Diversity’ sums up the country rather well, and its citizens are deeply proud of this fact. All of the world’s major religions put in an appearance here, the best represented being Hindu (hence the many ‘sacred’ cows causing traffic jams in the capital, New Delhi!) as well as Muslims, Christians and Buddhists. The hustle and bustle is virtually constant, but there are always peaceful, spiritual spots that you can escape to easily. With a population of over 1.1 billion (2007 est.) it’s not really a surprise that it’s a bit noisy!

Goa, India’s smallest but richest state, is famous for its beaches, churches, temples and architecture. It was ruled by the Portuguese for more than 450 years so has a very different feel to other parts of the country.

  • Location: Goa, India

Volunteer work will vary based on the needs of the project at that time. You could teach at a local school, care for young children at a day care centre or help with computer education. You’ll generally work five days a week for approximately three to five hours per day. Most work occurs in the morning before lunch. But some placements require afternoon work as well.

Teaching

Volunteer activities in this field include:

  • Teach children English and Mathematics in the schools. No prior teaching experience is necessary.
  • Creating a playful environment and enhance the creativity of the children through painting, playing games, singing etc.
  • Working at creating low cost teaching material in making education more fun for the children
  • Ensuring regular health check ups for the children in each school through co-operating with the local doctors and hospital staff

Early childhood care and education is an important area of work. Also called "Anganwari", these centres carry out holistic childcare in the area.

Volunteer activities include:

  • Personal attention and care to the children coming to the centre everyday.
  • Assistance to the local worker to maintain records for each child based on health, vaccination, growth and nutritional condition.
  • Making and feeding the children a specially prepared nutritious meal everyday with the help of a local worker.
  • Continuous survey of all pregnant women and newborn babies in the area for regular health check ups and vaccination.
  • Creating a colourful and enjoyable environment for the children with games, stories and other creative activities (all material support and training for such activities would be provided)
  • Helping the students in completing study assignments
  • Organising education and fun activities for the children
  • Visiting students' homes for sensitisation of the family towards their children with special needs

Please be aware that while corporal punishment is now illegal in India and in no way condoned by Real Gap, it is still a common occurrence at many schools and orphanages. Although we are continuing to work with some of these projects it is with the aim of helping to educate those involved to alternative ways of disciplining children through the involvement of our volunteers and in country teams.

Volunteer activities would include:

  • Everyday care for the patients and assisting nurses in the centre
  • Maintenance of the facilities for the patients
  • To improve the look and feel of the centre through decorations etc.
  • To make the centre more patient friendly and offering company to often-lonesome patients

What were the highlights of your trip?

Both the morning & afternoon projects were great - I really enjoyed working with the different kids, learning about their cultures & traditions. The camp held an awareness day for the girls from the Slums which was really rewarding. Meeting all the different volunteers at the camp, making friends, chatting and laughing all the time!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1 - Pack lightly - it's cheaper to buy things locally at the supermarket (& don't wear white!) 2 - Have an open mind & embrace the experience - you'll get from it what you put in 3 - Bring something fun to do with the kids, e.g. bubbles, balloons, games etc - you won't be sorry!

What were the highlights of your trip?

Playing a memory game with the younger kids in the Fishermen's school, teaching them how to play Heads Down, Thumbs Up! The Bollywood movie was so good, although there were no subtitles, one of the project supervisors came along and told us what was going on! And Boomerang!!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

I didn't think a torch was essential but the camp really is quite isolated so if you walked to the Italian at night it is so handy. You should definitely take some toilet roll because loads of bars and restaurants didn't have any. If you're super active/energetic or whatever then this definitely isn't for you, we became so lazy.

No Child's Progress Is Monitored So Don't Expect To Teach Them Anything New Or Make Much Of A Difference! Our Group Didn't Do Much Cultural Things When I Was There, We Worked In The Morning Then Went Drinking At Night 'cause We Got That Bored. Not A Great Proper Travelling Experience, Oh And Also You Should Learn Some Hindi Too!! Indian's Will Love You....Goan's Are Amazing But Men From All Over Vacation There And Want Pictures Of 'white Girls,' Fyi.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Volunteering in the Orphanage. Getting to know the local staff and other volunteers. Diwalli.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Just one - Don't pack too much! there is a supermarket within walking distance of camp where you can get any toiletries, snacks and drinks. And clothes are so cheap to buy in the shops in Colva (which camp give lifts to twice a week) that you will end up buying loads!

The Trip Has Been Fantastic, I Have Enjoyed Every Minuet Of It! I Worked In The Orphanage In The Morning, And The Fishermans School In The Afternoon, Which Meant I Got To Work With Children Of A Variety Of Ages So Got Experience Of Teaching Various Levels Of Ability. The In-country Team Are All Fantastic, So Helpful And Friendly. They All Go Out Of Their Way To Make Sure You Are Having A Good Time, Not Only With The Volunteer Work But In Free Time As Well. They Helped Us To Arrange Additional Excursions On Top Of The Pre-planned Ones And Arranged Lifts To And From The Beach/ Shops Twice A Week. Additionally To This, They Arranged Events For Us Within Camp Over National Holidays (I Was There For 3 Holidays!) A Truely Amazing Trip, Definitely Recommend It.

What were the highlights of your trip?

My trip to Goa was unbelievable! The travel arrangements ran like clockwork thanks to your team, I felt very prepared and had all the information I needed. The highlights of my trip were firstly the volunteering it was hard to choose which project to do as all options were very exciting however I very much enjoyed what I did as the morning and afternoon projects were contrasting but equally enjoyable. The children I worked with were inspiring and I will never forget the experiences I had teaching them. I was also surprised by the number of friends I made on the trip, together we made the most of our time in Goa. The staff I worked with couldn't have been more helpful and I have a huge respect for the work they are doing in their communities.
