  • Volunteer Role (4 - 12 weeks)

Volunteer Role: 4 - 12 weeks

Destination info

Malawi is a small and beautiful country in Southern Africa, renowned for having some of friendliest people and a huge diversity of scenery. Malawi has it all, from palm-lined beaches to remote wilderness and safaris.  The country is dominated by Lake Malawi, stretching 500km down the Eastern border, estimated to take up about one third of Malawi’s size.

The project is located on the shores of Lake Malawi close to the town of Monkey Bay. Around 200km from the capital, Lilongwe, Monkey Bay is one of the main ports on the beautiful lake. Still, clear waters and golden beaches are at your doorstep as well as the nearby village of Cape Maclear. Nearby attractions include National Parks and the Mulanje Massif.
  • Location: Near Monkey Bay

This programme consists of many different project areas which involve a variety of volunteer roles. They are as follows:

Home Based Care
  • Putting together lessons on home based care activities such as: HIV/AIDS, malaria prevention, personal hygiene, drug administration, recording information, first aid, wound care, bed bathing, infection prevention, sexual health awareness, nutrition and digestion, TB and rehabilitation.
  • Possibly helping to set up a new Home Based Care programme in another village.

Malaria Project

  • Assist with malaria prevention techniques to help minimise the epidemic and protect the local communities against the mosquito transmitted disease, such as manufacturing specially custom designed mosquito nets and spraying interior walls of buildings with mosquito repellent.
  • Conducting malaria prevention research and education lessons to the local community.

Field Dressing Clinic
  • This is an afternoon activity held at the dressing clinic, and involves cleaning wounds, dressing/ bandaging wounds and making referrals to hospital if further treatment such as antibiotics are required.

Local Orphan Centre
  • Suited to any volunteer, though recommended to those with little or no previous experience.
  • Get involved with pre-school teaching to prepare the children for their education ahead.
  • Help with feeding each day.
  • Teaching the importance of health, nutrition and HIV/AIDS prevention.
  • During the afternoon, there is the opportunity to develop some sport activities and games with the children.

HIV/ AIDS awareness
  • Health talks in the communities.
  • Drama workshops on HIV/AIDS.
  • Home-based care support programmes.

Local community hospital and clinic
  • This option is suited to volunteers with previous medical experience as you will be assisting medics to provide primary health care to patients.
  • There is also work for non-qualified volunteers. This will involve shadowing local doctors, helping with admin duties or data entry for patients.

For all projects it is important to remain flexible in your attitude and work ethic and be prepared to help in any of the areas that are developing and use your initiative to instigate new project areas with the advice of project staff. Thus we do ask that you arrive with an open mind, positive attitude and strong work ethic in order to utilise your time best and in a way that leaves behind a lasting impression of your time and the volunteer project in Malawi. Itineraries and activities are subject to change.

Additional Information & FAQs

Minimum age

Minimum 17 years with parental consent, maximum decided on potential participants’ health

Accommodation

Your accommodation on this project will be in a shared volunteer house, within walking/cycling distance from the health centres and just a short drive to the hospital. Situated on the beach of Lake Malawi, just 7km south of Monkey Bay Town, the house has great views out over the lake. The property is fenced, gated and has a lovely big green garden.

Bedrooms are dormitory style and there is running water, a cold shower and western style toilets. Whilst both electricity and water are pretty reliable there are the odd power cuts and water shortages from time to time, that you should be aware of.

Meals

The house has staff that includes a cook, a housekeeper (volunteers are expected to do their bit to keep the house clean and tidy) and there is also a night watchman.

All of your three meals a day are provided. Breakfast is usually a get your own toast or porridge affair, though there might be the odd occasion where the cook treats you. Lunch is either packed or get your own (if you plan on returning to the house at lunchtime). The cook will prepare the evening meal for you.

Please Note: The fridge in the house is used to store the food from which your meals are prepared from each day as well as additional drinks that you will be able to purchase from the staff. You are welcome to buy your own food/ snacks and drinks but you must be aware that you will not be able to store them in the fridge.

Advice & Safety

Throughout your programmes you will have the support and guidance of the programme co-ordinator and team. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.

You will be assigned a personal travel advisor who will co-ordinate your programme with you. Feel free to contact them at any time before you go, or when you are on your travels.

In addition, you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.

What were the highlights of your trip?

They were the people I worked with on the projects (not managers of MVO). They work so hard to make the volunteers experience special. They were so welcoming and showing us their culture.

What top 3 tips would you give other travellers?

Go out there with clothes, medical books and shoes, toiletries for the people over there. Also pots of vitamins and lots of paracetamol is what they really need! Understand that there time frame is alot different to ours. Make an effort in learning their language, they are so grateful!

What were the highlights of your trip?

The volunteering projects were amazing, so worthwhile and it really felt like we were helping to make a difference. The way you formed such close bonds with your groups and such good friendships. I think the highlight of my trip was when on my birthday we had managed to arrange for all the HIV groups to come together and perform their dramas, songs and dances. It was so nice to see them all interacting with each other, sharing knowledge etc. A definite highlight. The weekends were of course awesome as well, Cape Maclear? Perfection!

What top 3 tips would you give other travellers?

Take rehydration sachets, a torch and insect repellant! If you get ill, seek medical attention asap, The Billy Riordan Memorial Clinic in Cape is great, it will cost you 10,000 MK but you get two weeks coverage with that and the doctors and everyone are so helpful but really don't wait for the project co-ordinators to realise you are ill and need medical attention!
