Rewarding work in the eastern European country of Moldova. Care for Moldova orphanage children in a rehabilitation centre or boarding school.

You’ll play with the little ones and teach the older ones. Mainly, though, you’ll give them much-needed love and affection.  This is a demanding yet rewarding placement for those who want to care for abandoned or sick children.

Volunteers will spend their time interacting with the orphaned children, while also experiencing Moldovan life and culture in the capital of the country, Chisinau.

Please note: Due to visa difficulties, this programme is only available to UK, EU or US passport holders.

What will I be doing?

  • Volunteer Role (2 - 12 weeks)

Volunteer Role: 2 - 12 weeks

Destination info

Moldova is situated between Romania and Ukraine. Chisinau formerly known as Kishineu, is situated on the Byk River in the central area of Moldova.  Visitors to this town are always surprised at how funky the city is; the communist government hasn’t put a downer on the nightlife, which continues until the early hours. The Moldovans attitude is focused on enjoying life – at all hours of the day. Visitor’s previous conceptions of this poor country may be quite inaccurate. Chisinau is the place to be in modern Moldova.

  • Location: Chisinau

Volunteer work takes place in a large rehabilitation centre for young children of 0-5 years.

The centre is home to about 200 children between 0 and 5 years old, some of whom are mildly or severely disabled.

The children are split into 11 groups of about 15 to 20 orphans divided by age and disabilities. Due to the lack of staff at the Orphanage, these children rarely have any playtime or attention other than being fed, dressed and washed. This is where the volunteer work comes in. As a volunteer you would choose a group to work with and spend time caring and playing with children on a daily basis. You may also help occasionally with the feeding and dressing of the children.

There is also the option during your stay to visit and help out at a smaller private orphanage run by "Save the Children". During the summer months this will be held at a summer camp outside the capital. There are 15 to 20 children aged between 2 and 16 years old and activities will include games, painting workshops, and team building activities.

What were the highlights of your trip?

I enjoyed every minute of this trip, the problem I had was that it wasnt long enough! every day was a highlight-it was hard at times and hearbreaking seeing the children with special needs and babies/ toddlers lying in the cots with nothing but I felt I made a difference to the childrens lives during my 2 week stay, brought some fun, laughter, stimulation, play and cuddles!

What were the highlights of your trip?

Spending time with the children at the orphanage

What top 3 tips would you give other travellers?

1 week is not long enough! Try to learn some basic Romanian, the carers at the orphanage don't tend to speak English. Give as much time to the children as possible-after all, that's what you're there for.

What were the highlights of your trip?

I learnt a lot from my trip to Moldova, it was a country I knew nothing about and a country I had never even heard of before organising my trip. The orphanage staff in my group were extremely friendly and helpful and my host made me feel welcome and at home throughout my stay! Working so closely with the children was the best experience, it brings so personal emotions that are sometimes too difficult to explain in simple terms to others. I enjoyed the lifestyle as well as the experiences whilst there and I would definitely consider going back to help further! One of the biggest highlights was shopping for shoes for the children and receiving all of the donations eventually that I had sent before my trip.

What top 3 tips would you give other travellers?

Be prepared for simple living, possibly sharing a bed depending on where you are staying. Be open minded to a completely different lifestyle, just go with the flow and enjoy learning about somewhere so different from home. Remember that even if you think that a cuddle or smile towards these children isn't alot or seems like your wasting your time the joy they feel within from that small bit of TLC is more than they may have for the rest of the day or even the week. Some children take a little while to get used to you but even if they smile for just half a minute, it brightens up there day no end.
