Popular gap year destinations
|

|
Gone are the days when Australia and Thailand were the most popular destinations to go on your gap…though don't get me wrong, they are still very popular and fantastic places to go - Australia particularly is one of the most popular destinations for people who head abroad with Real Gap.
According to research carried out by the Year Out Group (of which we are a member) the most popular gap year destinations have shifted due to the number of people who are taking a gap year/career break a bit later in life. This is fantastic because it means that people are heading out into the big wide world and going somewhere a bit different, giving somewhere new a go…and that's something to bear in mind when you are considering where to go - is there something a bit different that you want to do, something that you really want to see but are a bit unsure about going to that particular country…that doesn't matter anymore, because you're bound to find other people are doing it to. The world is really opening up.
The ever popular, somewhat intense and noisy India is top of the list. If you head for India then you are in for the most fantastic experience. Prepare to have your senses assaulted (especially the ears and the taste buds!) and to experience the harmony and beauty of the world's largest secular society and the country that brought us yoga! An unsurpassable culture from the cold harsh beauty of the Himalayas in the northeast corner to the hot, happening beaches of Goa as you head south. India is a destination with everything.
Joint most popular is the South American country of Peru. The ex-Incan wonderland and colonial stronghold is home to one of the world's greatest hidden treasures - Machu Picchu, with thousands of people trudging the Inca Trail every year to reach the pinnacle of all the lost cities! The city of Cusco, former premiere metropolis of the Incan Empire is also packed full of treasures and then you've got the white city of Arequipa, the notoriously unexplainable Nazca Lines, Lake Titicaca and the rather deep Colca Canyon…and that's just the south!
The East African nation of Tanzania is other joint most popular destination. Geographically Tanzania has a number of fantastic sights such as the African continent's highest mountain Kilimanjaro, the continent's largest lake, Victoria (named after our Queen of course!), the Masaai tribe and a number of famous and spectacular National Parks, including the world famous Serengeti, full of all the wonderful African wildlife, ripe for the spotting! You've also got an Indian Ocean coast and the islands of Zanzibar to satisfy the beach seekers.
Joint fourth comes China (huge, wild beauty, up and coming) and South Africa (Cape Town, landscapes, ‘rainbow nation') joint sixth Canada (beautiful outdoors, snow, not America!), Thailand (culture, food, gorgeous islands), Kenya (Masaai Mara, coastline, wildlife) and Ghana (slave heritage, rainforest, friendly people) and in joint 10th place is Australia (Great Barrier Reef, Sydney, Outback), Costa Rica (paradise, ultimate nature, volcanoes) and the UK (rain, rain, rain) - where we live!
All of these countries offer (dare I say it) ‘diverse' experiences for tourists and travellers - each of them bringing something different and exciting. Everyone is bound to love somewhere on the list, even if the others aren't for them.
Also, officially, all of them have better weather than the UK, which seems to us reason enough to go! |
