Sarah Blake
Youth Outreach Brazil
What was your motivation to take a gap break?
Being 24, I haven't don't much travelling alone so I just thought I would go for it. Volunteering is also something I have always wanted to do.
How did Real Gap assist you? How did they compare with your expectations?
They booked the trip. I did the rest - flight, insurance etc. When I was in touch they were very helpful.
What was the accommodation like?
Excellent. The family I stayed with were amazing - I was one of the family. I felt I was in the safest and nicest place out of all of my friends in Brazil. I loved it.
It was a house in a guarded little area - really leafy and beautiful next to Jardim Botanico.
What did you think of the programme?
It was excellent. Really intense for the first couple of weeks learning and volunteering and getting used to the country. But the hard work was worth it. The language school were brilliant with practical classes and then a real source of support and advice while away.
The volunteering was also excellent, flexible and genuinely grateful for your help. You were allowed to get stuck in immediately and work independently.
What was the most memorable moment of your trip?
My first class teaching English, being able to speak in Portuguese to Cariocas! And visiting Iguacu Falls - it was breathtaking.
Did your programme and destination meet your expectations? Any anecdotes?
Yes, it was hard to imagine what it would be like but the whole experience was excellent. Set up so you have the support there if you need it, but otherwise you are living and working in the country of your choice. You can absorb so much more about a place this way.
What do you feel you accomplished during your programme?
Loads! I learnt a new language, I learnt that I can make new friends and go it alone, I gained confidence in so many areas. I am really proud of myself for doing it and it has given me the bug now! I need to go away again soon!
How have you benefited from your experience? How have you changed?
I have realised that I can do things alone without worrying, and gained confidence about travelling. I am motivated to plan my next big adventure asap, And I feel like even though it was only a month, I did something worthwhile.
What advice could you offer to someone considering this programme?
Do a short language course before you go to give you the basics, I did and it helped so much. Otherwise it would be overwhelming at first. Also, don't worry about going alone. Honestly most people are alone and the whole attitude with everyone you meet, locals or travellers is lets make friends! Its great.
Make friends with locals - it is an amazing way to learn the best places to go!
