What is Sport Relief?
|
|
Sport Relief is an initiative put on by Comic Relief every two years (it alternates with the big Comic Relief show) that uses the “power and passion” of sports to fundraise millions of pounds (in 2006 it raised £18 million!) for a large number of causes, funds and initiatives to help underprivileged and vulnerable people in the UK and all over the world. The fundraising is done by people like you being sponsored to do all sorts of fun sports related activities.
You've probably already heard that the next Sport Relief is coming up in March - it has never been a better idea to use your sporting passion for the benefit of others.
Sport Relief and Real Sport ExperienceBoth Sport Relief and Real Sport Experience are dedicated to using sport to support the underprivileged people of the world, but they do it in different ways.
As it says above, put very simply, Sport Relief fundraises using sport to raise money to share amongst fantastic causes, funds and initiatives all over the world.
Real Sport Experience works by sending volunteers out to our particular sports projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, where they use sport (through coaching and teaching) to directly benefit the underprivileged communities that lack facilities and resources. For example, through Real Sport Experience you are able to volunteer on projects that create a structured environment for children who would otherwise be left to roam the streets, increase physical wellbeing and generally give people sporting opportunities that they would otherwise miss out on.
What you can do to take part in Sport Relief? You can contribute to Sport Relief in many different ways, but the main way is the Sport Relief Mile on Sunday March 16th. This event is held in lots of venue across the UK and involves being sponsored to walk/jog/run a mile, with all money going to Sport Relief. There are also loads of other fundraising ideas you could try, from organising something sporty in your office or with your friends and family. Head over to www.sportrelief.com for more ideas and information on the Sport Relief weekend as well as information on what the money is used for.
After you've done your Sport Relief Mile and have made your contribution to a fantastic cause, you're probably going to be interested to see what exactly it is that sport can do for underprivileged people. That's where a Real Sport Experience project comes in. Whichever sport you love, you can pretty much guarantee that the children of Africa, Asia and Latin America will be more than happy to give it a go and you'll be able to see for yourself the joy that sport can bring to people who do not have the sporting opportunities that we have here in the UK. Whether you want to coach it, teach it as part of a school curriculum or just want to enjoy the good you can do and have fun, then through Real Sport Experience is another way to make a contribution.
So, don't forget to do you bit and get involved with Sport Relief. See what you can do to help underprivileged communities that Sport Relief are raising funds for, have a look at your sports volunteer options now.
