Volunteering in Thai schools

Trip Highlights

  • Seeing the children’s confidence grow each day
  • Experiencing the real Thai lifestyle and becoming an important part of the local community

Trip Summary

Teach in Thailand and help Thai Children prepare for a better future by teaching them English in the rural Surin province in North-Eastern Thailand.  Your help and hard work will enable them to gain the important skills to look forward to a brighter future. In your free time you can experience the wonderful local Thai culture.

Being involved with this programme will enable you to gain valuable skills as well as benefiting the children you work with. Furthermore, by living in a traditional Thai village setting, you will soon become a valued member of the local community.

Trip itinerary

During this programme, you will have the opportunity to teach English mainly in primary schools and you may have th opportunity to teach at secondary schools, as well as teaching children with special needs (the latter two options are available on request only and you will need qualifications). Unlike schools in the Western world, there are no special classes for children with learning difficulties, so helping these children may prove a challenge at first however the rewards are clear and worthwhile.

Your time in Surin will give rural Thai children the opportunity to learn English with a native speaker. Tourism is the dominant industry in Thailand and most international companies with operations in Thailand expect a competence in both written and spoken English, so by offering your teaching assistance you are enabling the children a brighter and gainful future.

Your typical week will consist of volunteering Monday to Friday with a free weekend to relax or travel. On your work days you will be picked up from your accommodation around 8am and taken to the school. You will be returned to your accommodation at the end of each day, usually around 3-4pm. Our project coordinators will work alongside you throughout your day to answer any questions that you may have and to help you organise your day. All of our coordinators have experience helping our volunteer teachers to organise daily schedules and with lesson planning.

Destination Information

Thailand is just a beautiful country – outstanding natural gorgeousness, impressive architecture, eye-catching temples, lovely, friendly people and just the best Thai food you ever ate and a lot cheaper than over here.

You will be spending your time as a volunteer in Surin is in NE Thailand. The Gateway to the East, Surin, is a fascinating mixture of traditional Thailand with a strong Khmer and Laotian influence. Sitting on the border of Cambodia, the province of Surin is also known as the Elephant Province due to its large numbers of the majestic animals that can be seen almost everywhere.

What were the highlights of your trip?

The actual teaching was my main highlight, as the children are so happy and willing to learn. I also loved Surin itself, and the fact you could travel at the weekends.

Is there anything else you would have liked to have added to your itinerary?

Not at all - it was easy to organise any extra travel, and I felt like lots was included.

Tips for other travellers?

Really get stuck in - the more you put into the project, the more you'll get out of it, and the children (and teachers) will appreciate it. Think of ideas for the lessons - you can get involved as much as you like, and it feels great when you're teaching a lesson you made up. Bring extra spending money so you can travel at the weekends.

Any other comments?

Do it! You don't need experience, and you'll come back wishing you could stay forever!

The whole thing! The teaching was amazing and is almost making me want to do the whole experience again. Starfish Surin are so helpful and even helped us plan a weekend trip to the national park and a ride on the elephants.

Is there anything else you would have liked to have added to your itinerary?

A little more information on the things to do in surin and recommended places to eat.

Tips for other travellers?

Stay calm, don't panic too much when you get there Budget your money from the moment you get to the country Have fun and enjoy every moment

Any other comments?

When we first got to Bangkok it was a bit disorganised and me and my friend were just left in the hotel room as the coordinator had to do other pick ups. We didn't know about this and didn't know what to do. It would've been helpful if realgap had told us about this and given us this to do on that day.

What were the highlights of your trip?

The teaching was absolutely fantastic!!! the children in the school I was in were just very friendly and welcoming, and the staff there helped us a lot and again supported our time there. Also, the town we were staying was lovely, although it was quite small there was plenty for all the volunteers to do at night time and during the weekend. Elephant trecking and bamboo rafting was a real thrill of my trip, and something I will never forget!!!

Is there anything else you would have liked to have added to your itinerary?

No, it was quite nice being able to plan what we wanted to do at the weekends depending on your tastes etc. However, the team from Real gap in the town were helpful in telling us about activities we could do and helping us organise them aswell.

Tips for other travellers?

Go with an open mind and one that is willing to go with the flow as things can change quickly and you need to adapt. Relax and Enjoy, it will honestly be one of the best experiences of your life :) Even though Thailand is cheap, you will be surprised how much you can spend, so take enough for the time you are there for!

Any other comments?

You dont need to have a lot of teaching experience to do this project, however you need to be sure that you can stand in front of a class and deliver a simple easy to understand lesson. It gets easier as time goes a long and you get lots of support from the staff in the town, so dont get to nervous about it because there are always plenty of people around to help!!!
