Destination info

Thailand is just a beautiful country – outstanding natural gorgeousness, impressive architecture, eye-catching temples, lovely, friendly people and just the best Thai food you ever ate and a lot cheaper than over here.

You will be spending your time as a volunteer in Sangklaburi is in NW Thailand on the border with Myanmar (Burma). Sangklaburi is positioned on a 72 km long manmade lake fed by the numerous local rivers and waterfalls. The town is surrounded by mountains and creates a picturesque landscape, an idyllic location for travellers and volunteers.

  • Location: Sangklaburi, NW Thailand

During this programme, you will have the opportunity to teach English mainly in primary schools and you may have th opportunity to teach at secondary schools, as well as teaching children with special needs (the latter two options are available on request only and you will need qualifications). Unlike schools in the Western world, there are no special classes for children with learning difficulties, so helping these children may prove a challenge at first however the rewards are clear and worthwhile.

Your time in Sangkhlaburi will give rural Thai children the opportunity to learn English with a native speaker. Tourism is the dominant industry in Thailand and most international companies with operations in Thailand expect a competence in both written and spoken English, so by offering your teaching assistance you are enabling the children a brighter and gainful future.

Your typical week will consist of volunteering Monday to Friday with a free weekend to relax or travel. On your work days you will be picked up from your accommodation around 8am and taken to the school. You will be returned to your accommodation at the end of each day, usually around 3-4pm. Our project coordinators will work alongside you throughout your day to answer any questions that you may have and to help you organise your day. All of our coordinators have experience helping our volunteer teachers to organise daily schedules and with lesson planning.

Your guide will also talk you through your volunteer schedule.

The following day you will be travelling to Surin in the north of the country, departing from Bangkok mid-morning you will travel by train to Surin which will take approximately 7 hours. On arrival you will be taken for some food and another orientation at the Surin volunteer base.

FAQ

1. What is Surin like?

Surin is located in the area of north east Thailand known as Esaan. The province of Surin is home to approximately 1.4 million people with approximately 40,000 living in the main city centre area. Surin offers visitors the best hospitality Thailand has to offer. The area is largely untouched by tourism and as so the way of life remains honest, safe and fun. Visitors to Surin can expect a very warm welcome from the locals of all ages.

What were the highlights of your trip?

The teaching was absolutely fantastic!!! the children in the school I was in were just very friendly and welcoming, and the staff there helped us a lot and again supported our time there. Also, the town we were staying was lovely, although it was quite small there was plenty for all the volunteers to do at night time and during the weekend. Elephant trecking and bamboo rafting was a real thrill of my trip, and something I will never forget!!!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Go with an open mind and one that is willing to go with the flow as things can change quickly and you need to adapt. Relax and Enjoy, it will honestly be one of the best experiences of your life :) Even though Thailand is cheap, you will be surprised how much you can spend, so take enough for the time you are there for!

Is there anything else you would have liked to have added to your itinerary?

No, it was quite nice being able to plan what we wanted to do at the weekends depending on your tastes etc. However, the team from Real gap in the town were helpful in telling us about activities we could do and helping us organise them aswell.

Any other comments?

You Dont Need To Have A Lot Of Teaching Experience To Do This Project, However You Need To Be Sure That You Can Stand In Front Of A Class And Deliver A Simple Easy To Understand Lesson. It Gets Easier As Time Goes A Long And You Get Lots Of Support From The Staff In The Town, So Dont Get To Nervous About It Because There Are Always Plenty Of People Around To Help!!!
