If you're already thinking about your next getaway, but aren't sure where to go, why not turn to your favourite films for a bit of destination inspiration? There's never been a better reason for a day wrapped up in front of the telly...
1. Breakfast at Tiffany's – New York, USA
All-time classic boy-meets-girl movie, Breakfast at Tiffany's is a firm favourite here at RGE. The glamour, the drama, the will-they-won't-they's – we love it! Want to walk in Holly Golightly's footsteps? Take a trip to New York and saunter down Fifth Avenue, walk through the famous Tiffany’s store, visit Central Park, and even go and say hello to Lady Liberty at the same time. Check out our I Love New York trip and get the full experience.
2. La La Land – LA, California, USA
There was no escaping this movie last year, and for good reason! No one does a traditional musical love story better than Hollywood, and there’s nowhere more fascinating to explore than the bright lights, glitz and glamour of the USA’s West Coast. Take a look at our USA Western Wonder - LA to San Francisco trip and start planning your own adventure.
3. Blended – Sun City, South Africa
Don’t you just love stories where characters who hate each other are thrown together with hilarious consequences? Yeah, us too. Happily, this one’s set in rather beautiful surroundings as well, which makes it even better. South African safari romp, anyone? Why not make your own plans for a fun getaway with our South Africa Experience? Although we can’t promise hilarity or romance.
4. The Beach – Maya Beach, Koh Phi Phi, Thailand
Possibly one of the most epic travel films of all time, we can’t get enough of the gorgeous backdrops and idyllic settings to one of Leo’s defining roles in this gripping story. Don’t worry though, we’ve got a trip that’ll get you to paradise and having you walking in Leo’s footsteps without any of the drama with our Thailand Island Hopping trip.
5. Tomb Raider – Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia
Action: check, adventure: check, breathtaking scenery in an astoundingly beautiful country steeped in history and filled with really lovely people: er… check! We bet Angelina and the crew had an amazing time whilst shooting Tomb Raider in Cambodia, among other locations. Think all that gorgeous temple scenery was down to the film’s CGI team? Think again, Angkor Wat is all it’s made out to be – and more. See it for yourself on our brilliant Ultimate Cambodia trip.
6. Kong: Skull Island – Trang An, Tam Coc, and Halong Bay, Vietnam
We know you were probably on the edge of your seat watching Kong: Skull Island, and who wouldn’t be with such out-of-this-world landscape and devastatingly beautiful scenery? Oh, and the giant ape stuff too, that was pretty good as well. Fancy going to some of the film’s locations yourself (minus the stress of huge bugs, extinct carnivores, and generally unfriendly creatures making your life problematic)? Check out our Vietnam Travel Pass.
7. Lord of the Rings – Matamata, New Zealand
Lord of the Rings, what can we say? It was the trilogy that fifteen years ago wowed so many of us, and still now dominates a weekend film binge when there’s no other excuse for not getting washed or dressed for two days straight. But besides all the fellowship stuff, it was the magical settings and jaw-dropping scenery that often stole the show – it’s even better in real life, go and see on our New Zealand Experience.
8. Crocodile Dundee – Queensland, Northern Territory, Australia
Oh the lols; somehow the ’80s mastered the cheesy one-liners and made some pretty awesome comedies, and Mick Dundee has to be one of our favourite leading men of all time: “That’s not a knife, THAT’s a knife!” Genius. Go on your own walkabout through Crocodile Dundee country with our Australia Outback Explorer.
Other than broadening our minds, having fun, getting to see some beautiful countries and meeting new people, travel can also be blamed for helping us to reset our lives and make discoveries about ourselves that we haven’t yet realised – that pretty much sums up Eat, Pray, Love, although the film does put it a little more eloquently than that, but the point is you should definitely get out there and travel, now, go, yes, go now! Want to follow in Julia Roberts’s footsteps? You can with our Essential Europe tour, our Delhi to Goa Discovery, and our wonderful Bali Beaches trip.
If you’d like to visit any of these awesome world locations yourself, all you need to do is get in touch and we can tell you all about the best tours in each country. Give us a call on 01892 277040, ping us an email at [email protected], or chat to us online for more information.
