Ben and Harriet's Thailand Adventure - Day 6!

By Gap 360

Last updated: 20th March 2013

Over the past few weeks, a few members of the Gap 360 team have been jetting off to some of our epic locations in South East Asia to check out our projects and experiences. Now's the time for Ben and Harriet to conquer Thailand. They're going to be travelling around and trying all things Thai for the next two weeks so expect updates galore from the troublesome twosome!

Day 6

We woke up around 7:30am to be met by Lucy, who is the manager of the Thai Adventure here in Sangklaburi. She kindly picked us up from the volunteer house to take us to the Seedan Hotel to meet up with the Thai Adventure group- we had breakfast with the guys and then we all went on an orientation of Sangklaburi to be shown where all the bars, banks, chemists, coffee shops, laundry shops are. It was so handy to know where everything is; it was well worth the walk around and afterwards we headed to see the local temple to be blessed by the monk. We all took off our flip flops and then sat down in front him (don't forget to NOT point your feet towards the monks when you do this- it's disrespectful!) and someone's mobile phone started ringing! That awkward moment when you think "oh no that's mine" when infact, it was actually the monks! He answered, had a little chat and we all cracked up at what was happening before our eyes! After his phone call he then blessed us all by throwing water at us (it was COLD) and we then all were given a necklace with a pendant on. Nice touch!

We then said our goodbyes to the monk and the temple to make our way through Sangklaburi past a few local restraunts that we would all be eating in either as a group or in our own time. We ended up at 'P Guesthouse'- lovely place with once again the most amazing views over the lake, and this was when we got split into our volunteering groups, so either the building or community option and we were then briefed on the ins and outs of our new volunteering adventure. Harriet and I were visiting the childcare centre the following day, we were due to leave at 8am and they told us how to dress (so to give you guys an idea... shoulders and knees must be covered). After our full and very detailed briefing we then had the afternoon to ourselves and we all took advantage of the 95 degree weather and walked down to the lake to either sunbath or swim! Some of the group hired kayaks and some just stayed for lunch- however Harriet and I took full advantage of the sunbathing and swimming and loved our afternoon chill out sesh!

Every evening you have a 10 minute meeting at 6pm to talk over the following day to make sure everyone knows to take, what we'll be doing, to wear the appropriate clothes and a quick Q&A session.

We then all headed out for a dinner as a group and had far too many drinks; it had to be done! Got home around midnight exhausted and ready for a good nights sleep!
