Now their 'Ultimate Year Out' has officially begun, Melissa and Becky have kindly updated us on their first few days in the buzzin' Bangkok. We must admit, back in Real Gap HQ we're very jealous! Here's how they're getting along so far on their adventure...

Authenticity is something that is important to me in many aspects of life, in this respect, travelling. I want to be able to see the real country I visit and gain insight into the lives of everyday people – it’s a key part of travelling isn’t it?
Put quite simply, Cambodia is the best country I have been to in Asia primarily due to the fact that it largely felt genuine. Having crossed the border from Thailand where many places seemed to solely exist for the purpose of catering to foreigners...Read More
I was lucky enough to time my trip with Vesak when I headed over to Sri Lanka last month (this wasn’t done on purpose!). This is a huge festival in Sri Lanka, sometimes informally called "Buddha's Birthday", marking the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha.
The mood leading up to the first day of celebrations was frantic and excited. Big lanterns were being constructed in many towns and cities across the country soon to be unveiled competitively and strings of smaller lanterns (Vesak...Read More
Continuing on with her stories from Sri Lanka, Lisa's been dishing the dirt on our Sri Lanka Sea Turtle and Community project...
A local bus from Colombo to Kosgoda “whizzed” me down south towards our fantastic Turtle Conservation project. I say “whizzed”, but what I mean is “dawdled” its way along the coast giving me plenty of time to soak up life beyond the bus, including a Brahminy Kite (big bird of prey and very impressive) circling over a river.
I arrived at the accommodation which I was...Read More
I'm Ollie, and this is my first blog for Real Gap since luckily becoming an employee here. You can read a little more about me in my bio section, but in the meantime I hope you like what I have to say!
I can make no authoritative claim to be a seasoned traveler, and I would be taking liberties to call myself an expert on the many cultures and customs of South-East Asia, but having experienced the delights of Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh City and Kuala Lumpur to name but a few incredible...Read More
Real Gap's Lisa travelled to Sri Lanka at the start of the month to discover this beautiful part of the world. Find out how she got on on our Elephants and Community project...
I arrived in Rambukkanna in the dark (it gets dark at about 7pm all year round in Sri Lanka so be prepared for short evenings!) and so it wasn’t until the morning that I could take in the surroundings properly. Leaning over the balcony of the volunteer accommodation, I watched some tourists taking an early morning...Read More
So we finally arrived on the beautiful island of Koh Phangan! We are met off the boat by people from our hotel, who prove themselves as true diamonds by taking our luggage off our weary hands! We arrived at the hotel that Real Gap have provided us with and its clear that we are in a little piece of heaven at the beautiful Mac Bay Hotel. Here, not only do we have our own private pool, but we also have a bar and restaurant overlooking our own private beach! This is definitely the perfect place...Read More
Our very own Lisa has just come back from a trip to Sri Lanka, and over the next week she's going to be letting us in on what she got up to! First things first- we want to hear why we should be heading to Sri Lanka this year...
I hadn’t really had too much time to research Sri Lanka before I jetted off on my mission and so the usual devouring of a Lonely Planet took place on the flight from London to Colombo. As we flew over Southern India and on across the Indian Ocean, which was...Read More
