Trip Summary

Head to Ghana and volunteer as football coach in the lively city of Accra. Football is Ghana's number one sport, and you’ll be training teams and supervising matches with talented youth teams in Accra. When you arrive at the project you'll be assigned a team, and moving forward you'll be there to coach them to sporting glory, from heading up the training session on the beach to being chief supporter on the sidelines of a match. Plus, in your free time, you can explore more of Ghana or just relax on the beach. Be prepared to roll your sleeves up, there's coaching to be done!

What to expect at the project

For the first few days of your programme, you will have a fantastic orientation to really help you get settled in to your new surroundings and get to grips with how things work in Ghana. You’ll receive an orientation briefing covering lots of useful information relating to your programme and Ghana in general. In addition, you’ll also be taken on a tour of Accra including visits to the craft markets, shops, bars, banks and of course the lovely local beach!

Situated in the buzzing capital of Accra, our project gives volunteers the chance to develop their love for the beautiful game by coaching enthusiastic young Ghanaians. Football is passion throughout the country, especially after Ghana’s international team progressed to the quarter finals during the 2010 World Cup - and so you're sure to come across enthusiastic, bubbly young people who love the sport during your time here!

Transport

Transport between your accommodation and chosen project each day is not included in the programme, so you will need to make your own way to and fro. During the first few days of your programme, a member of our in-country team will accompany you to show you how to use the local transport system and ensure that you are happy and comfortable doing so before you start making the journey on your own.

Day in the life

You'll be first assigned your team when you arrive in Accra, and the fun all starts from there. The teams do vary in ability and age range between the U12, U14 to U17, and you'll be responsible for putting together the team's training programme as well as attending all of the training sessions and matches. Fancy giving your team the tough task of laps around the track, or fitting in press ups between their dribbling tasks? It's all down to you, so you'll have to adapt your training style to suit your new team.

The football teams come from a variety of different backgrounds, including schools, youth groups and clubs, all located within Accra. Variety is the spice of life- so expect to be coaching different abilities throughout your stay!

It does get quite competitive between the volunteers during the placement, as of course they all want their teams to knock the other off the top spot! You're sure to have a lot of fun during your time as a new coaching pro and as your team will be putting their trust in you, you'll feel more and more like their manager. It's an incredibly worthwhile and fufilling experience!

You'll receive lots of assistance during your time on the project; volunteers are not left alone and you will work alongside our in-country team and local coaches as well as the other volunteers.

During your free time, you'll have the chance to explore Accra and further afield. You'll have approximately 2 days off a week to get stuck in to the local culture, so as well as hitting the shops and markets in Accra and enjoying the local nightlife, you could sit back and relax on the beautiful Ghanaian beaches. There is lots to see and do a little further afield too, popular weekend trips include heading off to explore Kakum National Park and Cape Coast, Volta Region or even taking a flight to the north of the country to go on safari! Extra activities and weekend trips are not included in your trip, but the local team in Ghana will be able to help you arrange these.

Purpose and aim of the programme and how do you benefit the programme

This fantastic volunteer project connects international volunteers with sports clubs in and around the capital city of Ghana, Accra. While Ghana offers free education to children, some don’t get the best start in life. Without suitable extra-curricular activities, children may spend their free time on the streets, where they can find themselves in dangerous situations or mixing with the wrong sort of people, leading to anti-social behaviour and other vices.

By helping out at a football club, you are providing a much-needed opportunity for children to express themselves and have fun while keeping out of trouble. You will be contributing to the health, fitness and general well-being of the kids and nurturing their sporting ability. Who knows, you may just discover the next international footballing star!

Achievements

As well as getting the satisfaction of making a difference in the lives of young people, you’ll also gain great coaching experience in a unique setting. This’ll help prepare you for future roles in sport and education, and certainly make your CV stand out from the crowd!

You’ll also gain a fantastic insight into local culture by living and working alongside Ghanaian people. You’ll become a part of the community and make real connections with people in Accra, as well as the children you will be coaching.
