What to expect at the project

When you first arrive into Thailand, you’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your accommodation in Bangkok. You’ll enjoy two nights staying close to the legendary backpacker hub of Khao San Road. Spend your time here exploring, settling into Thai culture and enjoy a guided tour that’ll take in the biggest and best sights of this incredible Southeast Asian city.

On your third day in Thailand, you’ll be transferred to Surin where your project is based. The journey from Bangkok to Surin will take approximately 6-7 hours, and you will usually travel by train. On arrival, you will be shown your accommodation and receive a full briefing about your volunteer placement. The following day, you’ll meet the staff and the children at the school, and your volunteer placement will begin.

During your time at the project, you will have the opportunity to teach English mainly in primary schools and you may also have the opportunity to teach at secondary schools and teach children with special needs (the latter two options are available on request only and you will need qualifications). Unlike schools in the Western world, there are no special classes for children with learning difficulties, so helping these children may prove a challenge at first however the rewards are clear and worthwhile.

Your time in Surin will give rural Thai children the opportunity to learn English with a native speaker. Tourism is the dominant industry in Thailand and most international companies with operations in Thailand expect a competence in both written and spoken English, so by offering your teaching assistance you are enabling the children a brighter and gainful future.

Songkran: During Thai New Year (Songkran), all volunteer projects will be closed for a few days during the festivities, so you will have a break from volunteering at this time, but it is a great opportunity to enjoy the celebrations and experience Thai culture. 2018 dates: 13th-17th April. 2019 dates: 13th-17th April.

Day in the life

Morning

On your work days you will be picked up from your accommodation around 8am and taken to the school. You will assist other teachers in the classroom and deliver lessons to the children. Your main focus will be teaching English, and you will help the children with their reading, writing, listening and speaking. You will also plan and lead fun games and activities in the classroom. This is your opportunity to get creative and engage the children and make them excited to learn!

Afternoon/Evening

Your day will finish around 2:30-3pm, when you will be returned to your accommodation. You can spend the afternoon relaxing, chatting to other volunteers and planning your lessons for the next day. In the evenings, you can either prepare meals in the volunteer kitchen or head out and eat in one of the local restaurants.

Weekends

Your weekends are free to relax or explore. Surin is a beautiful region with plenty to explore. It is also close to the Cambodian border, so you could hop over for a long weekend of exploration and adventure!

Purpose and aim of the programme and how do you benefit the programme

This project gives rural Thai children the opportunity to learn English with a native speaker. Tourism is the dominant industry in Thailand and most international companies with operations in Thailand expect a competence in both written and spoken English, so by offering your teaching assistance you are enabling the children a brighter and gainful future. You’ll also be assisting the teachers in the school, who will value your contribution and creative input in the classroom.

Achievements

This project is an excellent opportunity to gain teaching experience in a unique setting. You’ll be delivering approximately 15 50-minute classes a week, to classes of between 30 and 60 pupils. Our project coordinators will work alongside you throughout your day to answer any questions that you may have and to help you organise your day. All of our coordinators have experience helping our volunteer teachers to organise daily schedules and with lesson planning. You will come out of the experience with new skills and confidence as a teacher.

You’ll also experience the satisfaction of having made a difference in the lives of the children you teach. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the results of your work as the confidence of the children grows.

Your first two nights in Thailand will be spent in a comfortable hostel near Khao San Road in Bangkok.

You will then be transferred to Surin, where you will be staying in one of several shared volunteer houses in a multi-share room. You will usually share with 3-5 people in a room. Beds, bedding and storage are included, and Wi-Fi is available.

The houses are basic but have self-catering facilities including a hob, sink, toaster, kettle, fridge and utensils, as well as communal living space. You will be staying near local amenities such as supermarkets and restaurants, where you can buy ingredients or eat out.

Meals are not included in the programme, however, eating out is incredibly cheap in Thailand. It is just a short walk to one of the many local restaurants where a meal can be purchased for as little as 100 baht (around £1.80). We recommend budgeting approximately £7-8 per day for food and drink.

DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service)

On this particular programme, as you’ll be working with children, you’ll need to undergo an enhanced DBS check and will need to have a clean criminal record.

DBS checks may list past convictions, cautions, reprimands, warnings, and if applicable will show whether or not you have been barred from working with certain vulnerable groups. Non-conviction information such as fixed penalties may also be included.

There is an additional cost for the DBS check, please speak to your travel advisor at the time of booking. The DBS process is in three stages:

1. Once we receive your booking payment, you will then be sent an online application link for the DBS check, which you will need to complete.

2. Once you have completed the application, the DBS will need verification of your identity – to do this you will need to take three original documents to your nearest crown post office and use their DBS and ID verification service. This costs approximately £5 and is payable directly to the Post Office.

3. It can take up to two weeks for your DBS to be processed, which will be sent to you directly in the post.
