You will work Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm, having weekends off to do whatever you like.

You’ll work as a tour guide, showing English speaking visitors around the museum as well as tutoring the museum staff  the English language and assisting them with the development of what they are able to offer English speaking visitors.

Working within the Education Department, which has around 40 staff members you will also assist in different tasks that will depend on the current needs of the museum, such as, collecting feedback, directing visitors, writing publications and correcting information.

You may be asked to assist staff with their outreach activities outside the museum, which is mostly located in adjacent rural areas.

What skills will I need for the internship?

Your CV will need to be accepted by the project before we are able to confirm your place.

Relevant knowledge and/or experience in Chinese History is preferred but not essential. You will be provided with educational material and learning tools before you travel to China and you will be expected to have some knowledge of the Terracotta Warrior Museum upon arrival in China, however, training will be given whilst on the internship.

Interns are to be of a professional and mature status. You will need to be aware of the cultural differences that most volunteers experience whilst living and working in China.

Day 1 – Arrival to Xi’an

On arrival to Xianyang Airport in Xi’an (airport code XIY) you’ll be met by a member of the in-country team at the arrivals gate.

You will be transferred to your apartment in Vivo City, which will take approximate an hour. You’ll then be left to unpack your things and settle in.

Day 2 – Orientation

This morning, there will be an orientation to run through the work that you will be taking part in at the project. This is the perfect opportunity to ask any questions that you have!

There will be volunteers who will be working on other programmes at this orientation, so it will be a great place to meet new people.

After the orientation, you’ll have time to relax and prepare for your first day at the museum. This would be a perfect time to do some more studying on the terracotta warriors.

Day 3 – First day on your Internship

Today will be your first day at the museum, so you’ll be up early. Help yourself to some breakfast before getting on a public bus, which costs about 1 yuan each way and will take about 5 minutes to get to the Terracotta Warrior’s shuttle bus stop. You’ll then take the 7:10am shuttle bus with other staff, which will take approximately 50 minutes to get to the museum. The shuttle bus is free.

A member of the in-country team will accompany you to the museum and will stay with you on the first day.

On arrival at the museum, make your way to the educational department where you will be met by a member of the museum staff. They will give you an orientation and you will be asked to fill out any necessary paperwork.

The staff member will then show you around the museum and run you through your daily tasks.  You’ll then get stuck in with your first day’s work.

Lunch will be provided at the museum.

When your working day has finished, take the free shuttle bus to back to the bus stop near Vivo City and then take the bus back to the apartments. The bus costs 1 yuan each way.

Dinner will be provided at the apartment around 7pm.

Following Weeks

You’ll work Monday to Friday, following the same itinerary as above. The day-to-day activities may vary depending on the current needs of the museum, however, the museum staff will be there to run you through your daily activities and to answer any questions that you may have.

The weekends are free for you to do as you wish. There are a number of sights to see in Xi'an, such as The City Wall, The Tang Dynasty Theme Park, Han Yang Museum, Shaanxi History Museum, The Big Goose Pagoda, The Small Goose Pagoda, plus much more.
