Do I have to travel for a whole year?
Not at all! Our trips range in length from 4 days to a year (or more!), and over half of our trips last 2 weeks or less. You can travel for as long as you want, and many of our customers book short trips to take during their time off work or university.
Can I book more than one trip?
Of course! You can mix and match as many of our 150+ trips as you like to build your perfect travel experience. You can even get great discounts for booking more than one trip!
Can I change your round the world itineraries to suit me?
Yes, all of our round the world itineraries are completely flexible and adaptable. Add in programmes, take them out, mix them up – whatever tickles your fancy!
Do many people travel solo?
Yes! Around 70% of our customers travel solo, so if you’re travelling alone you’ll meet plenty of people in the same boat as you! The majority of our trips are group experiences, and so you’re bound to make loads of new mates. Plus, we have exclusive Facebook groups for travellers to get to know one another, and some trips have buddy lists, which give you the contact details of other people in your group before you go.
Can I book with a friend/partner?
Absolutely. Travelling with a friend or partner is a great way to have unforgettable shared experiences. Depending on the trip, it’s usually possible to ensure you’re in the same room. We also have special discounts available to friends who book the same trip - it pays to do things together!
Can my friend/partner and I share a private room?
On some trips, accommodation is twin share so we can arrange for you to share a room, on others, private room upgrades are available at extra cost. Chat to a travel advisor to see if this is possible for your trip.
When is the best time to travel weather wise?
Every country is different and weather conditions can vary. Check weather sites such as accuweather before you travel. Whatever the forecast, it’s always worth packing a waterproof just in case!
Does travel look good on my CV?
Yes! According to a recent survey, 85% of employers said they would encourage young people to travel to gain confidence, independence and decision making skills, while 83% said that travelling helps a CV stand out & improves the chance of being shortlisted for an interview.
Will travel help me when applying for uni?
Yes. Not only will travelling help you stand out from the crowd, but it will also help you develop the independence and confidence you’ll need at university. Check out this page for more information on the benefits of travelling.
Do your trips cater for dietary requirements?
Some trips have meals included as part of the package. In these cases, we are usually able to cater for basic dietary requirements such as vegetarian, dairy free, and gluten-free. Let your travel advisor know if you have any dietary requirements, and we will do our best to cater for you.
Can I travel if I have medical conditions?
It’s important to declare any medical conditions to us at time of booking so that we can ensure the trip is right for you. If you declare a medical condition, we will send you a form to complete and ask your GP to sign to say they’re happy for you to travel.
How old do I need to be to go travelling?
You’ll need to be at least 18 years old to travel with us although you can book sooner as long as you’ll be 18 at the time of travel. No one is too old to travel! Most of our programmes are aimed at 18-30 year olds and you’ll usually find that most travellers on our trips are in their mid 20s.
How do I book?

How can I pay for my trip?
There are three options for payment: You can either pay in full, or choose one of our excellent payment plans:
Pay a £49 deposit and pay off the rest of the cost in equal monthly instalments up to 1 month before your trip begins.
Pay a £199 deposit and pay off the rest as and when you can, with the full balance due 84 days before you depart.

Can I make changes to my trip once I’ve booked?
Once you’ve received confirmation of your booking you can usually make changes up to 84 days before your departure date, for an admin fee. It is not possible to make any changes once you are within 84 days of departure. For more information, see our terms & conditions.
Am I protected financially?
We are a member of ABTOT, which means that in the event of our financial failure, you would either receive your money back, or continue with your trip (or be repatriated) if you have already departed the UK.
Are flights included in the cost of my trip?
International flights are usually not included in the cost of your trip, but some of our trips include internal flights. For great deals on flights, contact our flights team on 01892 277037 or request a quote here.
When can I book my flights?
You should wait until your place on your trip has been confirmed before booking any flights. Let our flights team know your itinerary and they can book flights that are tailored to your trip.
Do I need to get a visa before I go?
This will depend on the country you are travelling to. Check the FCO website for up-to-date visa information, or do a quick check on our Travel Store.
Will I need any vaccinations or malaria tablets?
We’re not medically qualified, so we cannot legally advise you on this. We recommend you take a copy of your travel itinerary to your GP 6-8 weeks in advance of travel for up to date vaccination advice.
Do I need travel insurance to travel with Real Gap Experience?
Yes, all travellers on our trips require a valid travel insurance policy. For a great policy designed with gap year travellers in mind, check out our excellent travel insurance options.
Why do I need travel insurance?
Travel insurance is so important if you are going abroad. Not only does it cover any medical expenses in the case of an emergency, but it also covers you for lost baggage, cancelled trips, & more. Don’t let your dream trip turn into a nightmare: get adequate travel insurance!
What should I pack?
This will depend on your trip. After booking with us, you will be provided with a recommended packing list in your online account. Along with essential clothes, you should pack toiletries, any medicines you might need, sun cream, and a waterproof. For most of our trips, you won’t need hiking boots; trainers will usually be enough.
What is the best way to take money with me?
We would recommend taking a small amount of local currency with you to start you off. If it’s not possible to take local currency then USD or GBP cash can be exchanged at a Bureau du Change once you arrive. It’s best to have at least two different cards (kept in different places!) which you can use to withdraw money from ATMs as you go. Make sure you speak to your bank to let them know you’re going abroad so they don’t block your card and check what their charges are. A good way to carry money abroad is with a pre-paid travel card such as Caxton FX. These allow you to load money in the local currency, and withdraw cash from cash machines or pay by card. These can be ordered through our travel store.
Will I have access to ATMs while I’m away?
Most major destinations have ATMs which accept international cards. In more remote areas, you may struggle to find an ATM so you should plan ahead to ensure you don’t run out of cash. If you are travelling on a group tour, your guide will be able to tell you when and where the nearest ATM can be found.
How can I contact home when I’m away?
Skype, email and WhatsApp are great ways to stay in contact abroad. Wi-Fi is usually readily available all over the world, and often free to use. You may also wish to purchase a local SIM card for your unlocked phone to make calls. Alternatively, you could purchase an international SIM card from our travel store.
Will I be able to use my phone when I’m away?
Most phones will work fine, although in some more remote locations the signal may be poor. Remember that using your current phone plan abroad may incur charges. Purchasing a local pay as you go SIM card can save you money. Be sure that your phone is unlocked if you plan to purchase a SIM card abroad.
What if there’s an emergency while I’m away?
All travellers on our trips are provided with a 24-hour emergency hotline that is manned by our UK office. If you have any problems, just let us know and we’ll do our best to help you.
How much spending money do I need?
This depends on your trip and on what sort of spender you are! Some people are expert budget travellers while others like to splash out on meals, drinks and activities. Check the inclusions and exclusions of your trip to help you plan a budget. Most trips will also provide you with a recommended spending money budget. If in doubt, ask one of our travel advisors!
Is it best to take a backpack or a suitcase?
This depends on the trip. Generally, a backpack is more practical if you’re on the move a lot, but a suitcase is usually fine too (although a hard-shelled case is not recommended). Whatever sort of bag you bring, we recommend keeping the weight under 15kg.
Are airport transfers included?
This depends on the trip. Many of our trips include an arrival transfer if you arrive at a certain time, but others don’t. If that’s the case, we can usually arrange a transfer for you at an extra cost. Some trips also include return transfers, but most do not as we like to give people the flexibility to stay on or travel someone else. Check trip inclusions or ask us for more information.
